Located 20 miles southeast of Atlanta, Stockbridge is known as the “Gateway to Henry County,” since it is the largest and northernmost city in the second-fastest growing county in Georgia. Stockbridge itself was first settled in the 1820s, then incorporated as a city in the 1920s. The community has since expanded to be the sprawling suburb it is today. Despite the growth, Stockbridge manages to keep its small-town charm as a city of hard workers. The Henry Medical Center has made the healthcare industry the largest employer in the city. There are also multiple industrial operations that provide employment opportunities east of the city, including distribution centers, paper mills and waste management. Even with the lingering smell, residents enjoy access to the many metropolitan amenities and can find great adventure within the Piedmont section of Northern Georgia.

Mixing up the housing market
As a growing suburban area outside of Atlanta, Stockbridge is filled with subdivisions and gated communities. Ivey Estates, Wild Wind and Eagles Landing are the more popular neighborhoods, lined with multistory houses on large plots of land. According to the City of Stockbridge’s 2024 Comprehensive Plan, the city is currently full of single-family detached homes and older apartment complexes. There are also small bungalows and mobile homes closer to the industrial plants for more affordable housing options. The goal for the coming years is to create a more balanced housing stock with a variety of homes. The city is also making revitalization efforts to Downtown Stockbridge, with a plan to add more residential and mixed-use developments to the area. The median single-family home price is around $325,000. However, recent housing trends show that the market is relatively balanced, so inventory is keeping up with demand.

Great retail and restaurants for Henry County
When Henry County residents need premier shopping and dining options, they head to Stockbridge. With Downtown Stockbridge’s latest revitalization efforts, Main Street has become a hub for retail and restaurants. There are several local businesses with offices and wellness services lining the street, including hair and nail salons. Dig into some barbeque or Southern cooking from the locally owned restaurants, or head to a bar for nighttime entertainment. Main Street also has grocery stores and fast-food options. In addition to Downtown, Stockbridge has several commercial shopping plazas for necessity shopping. The Interstate 675 exit, where State Highway 138 splits from US Route 23, has a plethora of name-brand retailers and discount stores. Residents can grab their essentials and then head to one of the many local or chain restaurants in the area. Pick between classic American fare, Mexican cuisine or seafood — most restaurants are casual dining, though there are buffet options and an upscale bistro. Further south, Eagles Landing Parkway has several commercial spaces with shopping malls along it. Shop at nationally known retail stores and grab a bite at an ethnic eatery or chain restaurant.

New art and culture initiatives
Stockbridge is one of the many areas contributing to Henry County’s growing art scene. The newly built Stockbridge Amphitheater opened its doors in September 2021 and has become a thriving outdoor event venue hosting concerts and live performances. A future Cultural Arts Center is also in the works for the city, but still in the planning phase. Walking around Downtown, residents will soon be able to spot murals that capture the heart of the community, thanks to Downtown’s Public Art Initiative. “Connecting Community” is the name of the first one, and there are four more planned for the project. There are also several art studios that teach painting classes to the public.

Stockbridge’s parks and outdoor amenities
The city’s suburban landscape is flush with community parks that bring opportunities for outdoor recreation. All five of Stockbridge’s parks are maintained by the Henry County Parks & Recreation Department, with most containing a playground for little ones and walking trails for exercising. J.P. Moseley Park has a disc golf course that has been recognized by the Professional Disc Golf Association, plus a recreation center that offers indoor fitness facilities. Golf enthusiasts can play a round at Rum Creek Golf Course or Eagles Landing Country Club. Additionally, residents who want to become one with nature can explore Panola Mountain State Park, 11 miles away. As part of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, Panola has 25 miles of hiking trails, two fishing lakes and a nature center. Go camping or learn how to climb trees through one of the park’s recreational programs.

Quality schools in Henry County
Stockbridge’s primary education system is the Henry County School District. As the eighth-largest school district in Georgia, Henry County serves over 43,000 students across 52 schools and maintains a B-minus Niche grade. Students can excel with quality athletic departments, after-school programs and gifted classes. Stockbridge High School is the city’s specific high school, serving over 1,500 students. Additionally, the area has two private schools and three academies for those who prefer to attend them. When it comes to higher education, Clayton State University is 5.4 miles away in Morrow. The 200-acre campus enrolls roughly 5,840 students, with most of them living on-site.

Commuting around the Atlanta Metro Area
There are many options for traveling around Stockbridge. Residents who rely on public transportation can use the Atlanta-Region Transit Link Authority’s Xpress bus lines. Route 431 travels from Stockbridge to Midtown Atlanta, while Route 432 goes to Downtown. In 2017, the City of Stockbridge created the Bicycle, Pedestrian, & Trail Plan with the goal of building a non-vehicle transportation system that allows people to walk or bike through the city. However, the primary mode of transportation continues to be personal vehicles. Roughly 81% of the population drives a car to work, with an average commute time of 31 minutes. These commuters can use US Highway 23, Interstate 75 or Interstate 675 to travel north or south. Anyone in need of a domestic or international flight can head 12 miles east to Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, one of the busiest and most efficient airports in the world.

Hampton residents can find convenience in taking I-75 to and from Downtown Atlanta.

Stepping up with a new police department
With a crime rate of 28.3 per 1,000 residents, Stockbridge has received a B rating in crime and safety from Crimegrade.org. The Stockbridge Police Department officially launched in July of 2022 as a brand-new agency dedicated to protecting the city. Before, Stockbridge relied on the Henry County Police Department. The SPD’s Citizen’s Police Academy is a form of community engagement that provides education and interactive training to the public and is one of many the department plans to implement.
