Stonehouse offers golf communities and rural living near Williamsburg

Stonehouse took its name from a Colonial-era abode near the York River. Though the house is long gone, its name remains. These days, the area includes several subdivisions and a shopping area on Richmond Road. Outside its subdivisions, the community offers quiet country living and access to a state park and highly rated schools in upper James City County. “It’s more rural, but we also have neighborhoods,” says Williamsburg native Lisa Langenhennig, an associate broker with Coldwell Banker Traditions. Most Stonehouse homes are clustered in a handful of golf course communities throughout the area. "They all have golf courses,” Langenhennig says.

Homes in golf subdivisions, plus larger lots in more rural areas

New Traditional and Colonial-style homes, plus some farmhouses and townhomes, make up most of the subdivisions. Townhomes sell for $250,000 to $500,000, while single-family homes go for $450,000 to $850,000. The rest of Stonehouse has a more rural character. Colonial-style properties on larger plots of land can sell for $550,000 to $800,000, and ranch-style homes go from $330,000 to $530,000. The community’s CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, compared to the national figure of 4.

Education at well-regarded WJCC schools

Stonehouse is zoned to Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools, which receives an overall A-minus grade from Niche. Students can attend Stonehouse Elementary, which also gets an A-minus, followed by B-plus-rated Toano Middle. Warhill High, 10 miles from Stonehouse and the newest of WJCC’s three high schools, receives an A-minus grade and is the home of the district’s Career and Technical Education Center. Postsecondary options include Virginia Peninsula Community College, adjacent to the high school, and William & Mary, a public university roughly 15 miles away in Williamsburg.

Golf at clubs like Stonehouse, plus river recreation

Stonehouse is anchored by its namesake golf club. Designed by noted course architect Mike Strantz, Stonehouse Golf Club closed in 2017 before a change in ownership and a renovation allowed it to reopen as a public course in 2019. Golfers can also head to other public courses within the community, including Kiskiack Golf Club and Colonial Heritage. York River State Park provides other recreation options in Stonehouse. Visitors can walk or bike on trails along the water, while boaters can launch from the Croaker Landing dock.

Norge's shops and restaurants on Richmond Road

Most of Stonehouse is quiet, rural and residential. Shopping is mainly contained to the small community of Norge along Richmond Road. “There’s a Food Lion and a CVS,” Langenhennig says. “There are some restaurants. That little strip of Norge has all of that.” Honey Butter’s Kitchen is a local favorite for brunch, while Daddyo’s Tavern has live music on the weekends. Otherwise, scattered restaurants and shops make up the commercial landscape. Two Drummers Smokehouse serves smoked pork cooked over a wood fire, as well as burgers and creative specials. The area’s golf courses also feature eateries, like the Stonehouse Grill at Stonehouse Golf Club.

Events in nearby Williamsburg, such as Grand Illumination

Stonehouse’s community events are generally held at its golf courses, including golf tournaments. Nearby, Toano has a weekly open-air market from March to December. Otherwise, residents head into Williamsburg for local celebrations. The Colonial Williamsburg historic district holds its Grand Illumination event three consecutive weekends each December, offering holiday cheer capped off by a fife-and-drum parade and fireworks.

Interstate 64 leads to Richmond and Williamsburg

Interstate 64 cuts through Stonehouse, leading 30 miles southeast to Newport News and 40 miles west to Richmond. But most commuters head 15 miles to Williamsburg. The Toano route of the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority bus system serves parts of the area, with stops in Norge. The Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center is 10 miles away and includes an emergency room. Commercial flights are found 30 miles from the community at Richmond International Airport.
