Stratford is a large town near New Haven
Stratford is a large town about 15 miles outside New Haven that is surrounded by nature. “I loved growing up here,” says Karin Doyle, who has worked with the town’s economic development for five years. “I have really fond memories, and it's a diverse area.” Part of this diversity comes from the town’s natural surroundings, with Roosevelt Forest at the top and Short Beach at the bottom. There are several events held throughout the year, including the music festival Blues on the Beach. Locals can find most of their shopping needs in town, and can eat dinner at a locally owned restaurant, such as Riverview Bistro. Students attend Stratford Public Schools, which receives a B-minus from Niche.
Variety of homes along Stratford streets
Sidewalks run through most of the residential parts of Stratford, separated from the street by a line of trees that is interrupted by driveways. Trimmed grassy lawns are decorated with young trees, decorative bushes and shrubs and an assortment of flowers. Residents live in a variety of houses built in the early to mid-20th century. Ranch styles and bilevels sit among farmhouses and Foursquares. Cape Cods are found throughout town, many with additions, as are some homes built in the late 20th century with colonial influences. Prices typically fall between $300,000 and $750,000.
Homes in Stratford range from modest, classical, medium, and large.

Stratford High participates in longest running dual-enrollment program
The town has its own school district, Stratford Public School, which has nine elementary schools and two middle and high schools. Students can start at Eli Whitney Elementary, which receives a B-minus from Niche and teaches kindergarten through sixth grade, before attending Harry B. Flood Middle, which scores a C-plus and offers seventh and eighth grade with a student-teacher ratio of 12 to one. At Stratford High School, which earns a B, students can participate in the University of Connecticut’s Early College Experience, which is the nation’s longest-running dual-enrollment program.

Stratford residents enjoy the shores and trees
With a forest in the northern part of town and beaches in the south, there is so much for locals to do. “Stratford is the only town in Connecticut to have a public forest and a public beach,” Doyle says. Roosevelt Forest, at the top of the town, features miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing. At the start of June, all residents are sent Beach Stickers, which give them free access to Short and Long Beach all year. “Ironically, Long Beach is shorter than Short Beach,” Doyle says. At Short Beach, people can lay in the sun or swim in the Atlantic before making a tee time at Short Beach Golf Course, which is a nine-hole course. There are several other parks scattered throughout town, including Boothe Memorial Park and Museum, which features an accessible playground, rose gardens and a museum filled with early farm and transportation equipment.

The town puts on several events for the community to attend, including the Annual Great Pumpkin Festival at Boothe Memorial Park, which features a pumpkin carving contest and kids’ costume parade. The standout event of the year Blues on the Beach, a music festival held at Short Beach every summer that draws in a large crowd. Stratford residents are given exclusive access to park on the beach if they want to attend the festival.
Two Roads Brewery uses a sustainable process
There are several locally owned restaurants in town, including Riverview Bistro, which serves seafood with waterfront views, and Dal Mare Pizzeria, which is a take-out Italian restaurant and pizzeria with homemade recipes. Doyle recommends Two Roads Brewing Company, which uses a sustainable brewing process with less water to make 12 different beers year-round and a rotating selection of seasonal drinks. Residents can get their groceries from Stop & Shop and do the rest of their shopping at Target and Home Depot.

Flood insurance and awareness in Stratford
Stratford properties, especially those near the water, are prone to flooding, so homeowners are encouraged to get flood insurance, which is required for anyone with a federally backed mortgage. Beyond that, residents should have a safety kit, including a first-aid kit and safe drinking water, and know safe transportation routes that go through higher ground.

Aviation history, legends of hidden treasure and plenty of sandy beaches all come together to make the Stratford Center Historic District an intriguing neighborhood. “Stratford is unique due to its historic charm and the proximity to the water. We tend to attract boating enthusiasts, fishermen and the like,” says Janet Lengel, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty and a Stratford native. The Long Island Sound borders this coastal neighborhood to the south and the Housatonic River to the east. Wandering through the neighborhood, some with sidewalks, some without, a diverse range of single-family homes greet the eye, along with a few clusters of condominiums and townhouse communities.
Cozy Cape Cods, bungalows and quintessential New England colonials dot every corner. Boasting modest green yards, the occasional front porch and attached garages, residents enjoy lot sizes around 6,970 square feet with enough room for the family pup to run around. With an average sales price of about $370,000, prospective homebuyers can score a condominium from the lower $100,000s to the $300,000s, or a townhouse from the $200,000s to the mid $400,000s, with a few brand new luxury waterfront townhouses selling in the mid $700,000s. Single-family homes also vastly range in price, from a classic three-bedroom colonial showcasing hardwood floors and an updated kitchen for $425,000 to a 2,450 square-foot waterfront Cape Cod with a guest suite for $1.5 million. Here, many homes are in a flood zone, so flood insurance is something buyers will have to consider.
The Stratford School District serves the neighborhood, scoring average ratings on Niche. Students attend Lordship Elementary School and David Wooster Middle School, both scoring a C-plus rating. Boasting B, Stratford High School offers a range of after-school activities and athletics. In the spring, the hallways are filled with golf, tennis and lacrosse players getting ready for practice. There are also two magnet elementary schools in the area, Stratford Academy: Johnson House and Stratford Academy: Victoria Soto School.
Proximity to outdoor spaces is a huge draw for locals, most notably the beaches. Some offer water access in addition to sports facilities, such as Short Beach Park, home to tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball fields, a playground and a golf course. In contrast, Long Beach stretches 1.5 miles along the Long Island Sound and consists of pure sand and waves. Pleasure Beach Park, once home to an amusement park, was abandoned after a fire. Today, it is only accessible by water taxi from nearby Bridgeport. Visitors can explore the beach or have a relaxing picnic. Those looking for a scenic stroll can also head to Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge and take in the views while the soundtrack of songbirds rings out in the distance.
In addition to the beaches, Stratford has multiple museums and annual events that add to its character. The National Helicopter Museum and the Connecticut Air and Space Center elaborate on the aviation history of the area, while every first and third Sunday throughout the year, residents can visit the Shakespeare Market on Elm Street, the former grounds of the Shakespeare Theatre. “The Shakespeare Theatre was what we were known for back in its heyday before it burnt down. However, there are plans to rebuild it and host various plays and shows,” Lengel says. Here, locals can delight in fresh produce, baked goods, artisan crafts and more while admiring the views of the Housatonic River.
Outriggers and Riley’s by the Seawall are great options for seafood with waterfront views. At the same time, Acapulcos Mexican Family Restaurant and Big Jim’s Galley are popular spots for a laid-back ambiance. For a drink after work, Two Roads Brewing Company off Stratford Avenue is the largest brewery in the state, serving seasonal and limited-release brews, while Athletic Brewing Company is the largest brewer in the US to produce non-alcoholic beer exclusively. Stratford Crossing is the one-stop-shop for locals, home to ShopRite and Stop & Shop for groceries, The Home Depot, Petco and Walmart Supercenter. Just next door, residents can workout at Esporta Fitness or head to the nail salon for a self-care day. Commuters can easily hop on Interstate 95, which runs through the community. Locals can also hop on the Metro-North Railroad to head the 60 miles into New York City.
