Historic homes next to Sumter's Downtown District
Hampton Park is a small residential neighborhood at the center of Sumter’s historic district. Home to Sumter County Museum, Memorial Park and the city’s mainstage theater, residents of Hampton Park always have something fun to do. Crosswalks link the neighborhood to the Downtown district, which has “recently seen a tremendous resurgence,” Talmadge Tobias says. A local Realtor with Re/Max Summit, Tobias is a lifelong Sumter resident and the former city manager. “The people who live in Hampton Park really like that they can have an old, larger home and still be so close to all the downtown shops and restaurants.”

Historic Queen Annes, Craftsman bungalows and American Foursquares
Homes in Hampton Park sit on tree-covered residential blocks less than a half-mile from Main Street. Many homes in Hampton Park’s Historic District date back to the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. They come in various architectural styles, from Queen Annes with wrought-iron façade details to vernacular American Foursquares made of brick. Stately Georgian-style homes stand tall next to cozy Craftsman bungalows and boxy Cape Cods. Some newer homes were built as recently as 2023, but Tobias says these are few and far between. “People move here because they like its older, more traditional look and feel.” The design review board preapproves all construction plans to keep the neighborhood’s nostalgic, charming character intact. Much like the home styles, listing prices vary in Hampton Park. An average three-bedroom house, whether old or new, usually ranges from $100,000 to $400,000. The larger historic homes with four- to six-bedrooms can cost up to $700,000.

Walk to Memorial Park and Sumter County Museum
Hampton Park is home to one of the city’s oldest parks. Located on the corner of Park and West Hampton Avenues, Memorial Park “is dedicated to the brave soldiers who fought here during the Revolutionary War,” Tobias says. Its paved walking trail passes by a central gazebo and winds under towering trees, many of which “are more than a century old,” Tobias adds. Local artisans showcase their work and teach classes at the Sumter County Gallery of Art about a block north. On the neighborhood’s east edge, the Sumter Museum is a historic Edwardian-style house dating back to 1916. Antique furniture and intricate woodwork decorate each room, while the backyard replicates a typical working farm from the mid-eighteenth century.
The walking trail at Memorial Park is well-liked by people who walk their dogs.

Participating residents open their historic homes to hundreds of curious locals who’ve come to meet new neighbors and learn more about their city’s history.
