Walk to Memorial Park and Sumter County Museum
Hampton Park is home to one of the city’s oldest parks. Located on the corner of Park and West Hampton Avenues, Memorial Park “is dedicated to the brave soldiers who fought here during the Revolutionary War,” Tobias says. Its paved walking trail passes by a central gazebo and winds under towering trees, many of which “are more than a century old,” Tobias adds. Local artisans showcase their work and teach classes at the Sumter County Gallery of Art about a block north. On the neighborhood’s east edge, the Sumter Museum is a historic Edwardian-style house dating back to 1916. Antique furniture and intricate woodwork decorate each room, while the backyard replicates a typical working farm from the mid-eighteenth century.Meet neighbors at the annual Porches of Sumter event
Hampton Park hosts one of the city’s most anticipated events each year on the first Thursday in October. The Porches of Sumter is a neighborhood walking tour that feels more like a giant block party than a formal event. Participating residents open their historic homes to hundreds of curious locals who’ve come to meet new neighbors and learn more about their city’s history. Throughout the three-hour stroll, attendees walk from house to house stopping on each front porch to mingle with neighbors and pick up another hors d’oeuvre.Main Street is a half-mile walk away
Dozens of local restaurants and small businesses are within walking distance of Hampton Park. Crosswalks connect the neighborhood to Liberty Seafood. A community staple, the little fish market sells live crabs and fresh tilapia fillets along with restaurant-style meals like the fried catfish sandwich. Simpson Ace Hardware is a local chain that carries all kinds of home improvement essentials, from garden supplies to kitchen décor. From here, it’s about a half-mile walk to the long-standing restaurants, breweries and clothing boutiques that line both sides of Main Street. Groceries are found only a few blocks further at Piggly Wiggly.Business Route 76 borders Hampton Park
Hampton Park is on the cusp of Sumter’s downtown district, between Business Route 76 and North Purdy Street. Residents can follow the crosswalks over Highway 76 and arrive on Main Street in less than a half mile. Even closer, Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital sits directly across from the Sumter Museum. Drivers can head north on Highway 76 and hop on Business Route 378 to access the Columbia Metropolitan Airport in about 50 miles.Historic homes next to Sumter's Downtown District
Hampton Park is a small residential neighborhood at the center of Sumter’s historic district. Home to Sumter County Museum, Memorial Park and the city’s mainstage theater, residents of Hampton Park always have something fun to do. Crosswalks link the neighborhood to the Downtown district, which has “recently seen a tremendous resurgence,” Talmadge Tobias says. A local Realtor with Re/Max Summit, Tobias is a lifelong Sumter resident and the former city manager. “The people who live in Hampton Park really like that they can have an old, larger home and still be so close to all the downtown shops and restaurants.”Sumter High School offers 16 career programs
