Charming homes and friendly community in Meadowbrook
Three miles east of Downtown Syracuse, Meadowbrook is a suburban reprieve from Syracuse's urban sprawl. "It's probably the most affluent part of the city," says Zachary Johnson, an associate broker at Acropolis Realty Group with over seven years of experience. "The layouts of the houses are really unique and custom-built. You're not going to get a Cape Cod or mass-produced house here." There aren't many businesses or green spaces here, so residents head to other neighborhoods for shopping, dining and recreation, like Westcott. "It's pretty much all residential," Johnson says. Centro buses and state Route 92 make it easy to get around town. "It's definitely a close community," Johnson says. "Everybody knows everybody in Meadowbrook."
Spacious homes with unique architecture
Meadowbrook streets are lined with single-family homes and manicured lawns peppered by mature oaks and pines. "It's probably one of the city's highest concentrated areas of single-family homes," Johnson says. Architectural styles are diverse, but ranch-style, Colonial Revival and Craftsman styles are typical, generally dating to the early- or mid-20th century; there are also a handful of midcentury modern and custom-built homes. "They're generally well-kept homes," Johnson says. "You'll get a lot of stone/brick masonry. The houses are usually a little bit larger with super unique layouts." No two homes are exactly alike, but charming features like brick chimneys, dormer windows and ornate entryways can be found throughout the neighborhood. Cars are typically parked along uncovered driveways or in attached garages. Prices range from about $200,000 to $500,000, depending on a home's size and features.
Preparing for college and careers at Nottingham High
Meadowbrook is part of the Syracuse City School District, rated C-plus overall by Niche. Kids in kindergarten through eighth grade may attend the C-minus-rated Hurlbut W. Smith School. Nottingham High earns a B and offers dual-enrollment courses through Onondaga Community College. The high school also offers career and technical education opportunities for disciplines like creative expression and design, natural resources and business technology. Syracuse University is 2 miles away and enrolls of about 23,000 students. Some of the university's strongest programs include communications, education, public affairs and engineering and computer science.
Sports and views at Syracuse parks
There are over a dozen parks and green spaces within a few miles of Meadowbrook. A mile away, the dog-friendly Homer Wheaton Park is the closest, offering a playground, baseball fields and tennis/pickleball courts. Two miles away, Thornden Park is a popular place to picnic or play sports like basketball and ultimate frisbee. The 76-acre green space is known for its picturesque spots, including the lily pond and the E.M. Mills Rose Garden, where hundreds of rose bushes bloom. Nearby, the 12-acre Barry Park offers a playground, pickleball courts and a jogging trail with views of the restful Onondaga County Meadowbrook Detention Basin. Golfers can hit the links at the Drumlins Golf Club's 18-hole public course, or pay for a membership to access the private course, driving range and other benefits.
Small businesses with global flavors along Westcott Street
A few businesses are along East Genesee Street, including medical practices and a Dollar General, but Meadowbrook is primarily residential. "You're probably going to go to the university area for restaurants and things of that nature," Johnson says. A mile away, Westcott Street is lined with locally owned businesses, including a barbershop, a florist and thrift stores. Residents can start — or end — the day at Recess Coffee, a late-night cafe with paninis, oatmeal and locally roasted coffee. For lunch, Alto Cinco offers Mexican cuisine with a twist, like fried catfish burritos and jerk tofu tacos with pineapple salsa. Gangnam Style Korean Kitchen serves bibimbap and Syracuse Halal Gyro specializes in Mediterranean eats. Colucci, a fast-casual Italian restaurant is popular for comfort offerings, like fried gnocchi and olive oil cake. After a meal, there are desserts at Yeti Frozen Yogurt & Cafe, and Taps is a laid-back dive and pool hall. Several grocery stores are within 3 miles of the neighborhood, including a Price Rite and Trader Joe's, along state Route 5.
Supporting the Syracuse Orange
College sports are a big deal in Syracuse. On game days, expect neighbors dressed in orange heading to the JMA Wireless Dome to support the Syracuse Orange. "The whole city kind of revolves around college sports — that's huge," Johnson says. Those without tickets often head to sports bars and pubs, like Coleman's Authentic Irish Pub, 5 miles away, to catch the game. "Coleman's is probably the most popular bar in Syracuse, and downtown there's a bunch," Johnson says. "Football and basketball are wild, so all those bars will be packed."
Thoroughfares and the nearest hospital and airport
Route 92 passes through Meadowbrook, providing a direct route downtown. Meadowbrook Drive, a thoroughfare, is lined with sidewalks and Centro bus stops. "It's super easy to get anywhere you need to go," Johnson says. "There are bus lines to take you through all four quadrants of the city." SUNY Upstate Medical University is about 3 miles away, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport is a 9-mile drive.
