Peaceful subdivisions off of Main Street

Large public parks, organized subdivisions and popular restaurants define Long Hill, a relaxed neighborhood in Trumbull. The town used to be known as a bedroom community for those commuting to New York City or around Fairfield County, but it has gained more attention since 2019. "I used to say, 'Trumbull: a great place to sleep,'" says Fredda Takacs, a longtime Trumbull resident and real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Realty. "Now, great restaurants have come into the area, and though people will complain about the tax rates going up, the town has done a nice job of investing in its infrastructure." Public parks with pickleball courts and well-maintained walking trails offer chances to get outside, and the community frequently meets on the Town Hall Green for seasonal festivities, like Easter egg hunts and holiday tree lightings. Children are zoned to the A-rated Trumbull school district, which has a variety of programs to keep students engaged. Long Hill's CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10 is the lowest possible score, and well below the national average of 4.

Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals and townhouses in Long Hill

Long Hill’s residential streets are organized, quiet and lined with classic New England homes. “Both the lots and the homes in Long Hill than they are in other areas of Trumbull, so it’s a little cheaper,” Takacs says. Cape Cods, ranch-style houses and Colonial Revivals built in the mid-to-late 1900s sit beneath tall trees, with shrubbery and neat landscaping decorating their front lawns. Most of these houses are priced between $400,000 and $700,000, though spacious Colonial Revivals can cost as much as $1 million. Long Hill also has a few subdivisions of condos and townhouses that were added in the late 20th and early 21st centuries and feature colonial-inspired architecture and neutral vinyl siding. Developments like Trumbull Town Commons have community amenities like in-ground pools. Units in these areas are usually priced between $300,000 and $500,000.

Walking trails, BMX courses and sports courts at Indian Ledge Park

In the northern section of Long Hill sits Parlor Rock Park. It’s currently a forested hiking area with rocky outcroppings located between Old Mine Park and Indian Ledge Park, but in the 1800s, it was the site of one of the country’s first amusement parks, built by the Housatonic Railroad Co. to encourage rail travel. Residents may explore the wooded landscape now, but Indian Ledge Park is more popular. The Housatonic Rail Trail travels through the park, encouraging walking or biking. More adventurous bikers fly over the bumpy terrain at the park’s BMX track. Kids can practice baseball and soccer on the dedicated fields or run around the playground, and residents can socialize as their pets enjoy the dog park.

Local eateries along Main Street

Trumbull’s Main Street winds through Long Hill, making it easy to grab dinner from some of the town’s local restaurants. Customers order platters with falafel or beef shawarma from Abi’s Falafel, a casual Middle Eastern eatery. Italian Corner Deli by Massimo’s sells grinders and pizza. For more upscale Italian dishes, there’s Ecco Wine Bar, which serves tapas and handmade pasta. Main Street also has a Stop & Shop supermarket for groceries and essentials. The Trumbull Mall, which has retailers like Target and JCPenney, is about a mile south of the neighborhood.

Top-rated Trumbull schools

Trumbull’s school district is one of the main draws for families. “We have an incredible, active school system where kids really flourish," Takacs says. "All my kids went to Trumbull High and say their senior year was one of the best of their lives." Jane Ryan School, which serves kindergarten through fifth grade, earns an A rating from Niche, while Madison Middle School scores an A-minus. Trumbull High School has an A rating, and Connecticut named its agriscience and biotechnology center the top school for teaching plant science in the state.

Seasonal festivals on the Trumbull Town Green

Trumbull's largest event, Trumbull Day, is held in late June near Hillcrest Middle School. The festival includes food, carnival rides and games, a main stage with local bands, and fireworks. The Trumbull Town Green, a landscaped lawn with a gazebo near the town hall, is in Long Hill. Here, the community frequently congregates for seasonal events. In the spring, kids collect pastel eggs during the town’s Easter egg hunt. There’s also a free summer concert series where neighbors bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets to listen to live music. Local artists display and sell their work at the arts festival in September, and in October, residents paint pumpkins, play lawn games and listen to music during the fall festival. Early December brings a holiday tree lighting.

Metro-North commuter rail and major highways close by

Drivers often use the Merritt Parkway, which runs just south of Long Hill, to commute to cities around Fairfield County or to head 20 miles northeast to New Haven. Commuters can merge onto Interstate 95 in Bridgeport to drive 60 miles to New York City, but many who make the trek into Manhattan travel 8 miles south of Long Hill to the Bridgeport train station, where they park and then ride the New Haven line on the Metro-North Railroad. The train usually takes 90 to 120 minutes to arrive at Grand Central Terminal.
