Quiet living near Pearl Harbor

Located just north of Naval Station Pearl Harbor, on the southern end of the island of Oahu, Waipio is a quiet, residential area with an active population. “All throughout Waipio, it doesn’t matter the neighborhood, you have beautiful landscaping,” says Catherine Matthews of Callahan Realty Limited, who has over 30 years of experience in the area. “The streets have wide sidewalks and people are always out walking to the local parks to exercise.” The densely populated census-designated place is home to over 12,000 residents packed into a 1.25-square-mile area. While much of Waipio consists of neighborhoods and townhouse complexes, the area has plenty of greenery with major parks and golf courses nearby.

Residents can play a match on one of 20 tennis courts, and youth sports are held on baseball, soccer and softball fields. There is also an Olympic-sized swimming pool and an archery range. Golfers head to Waikele Country Club, which despite its name, is a public 18-hole course with a pro shop and restaurants on site. Waipio Neighborhood Park at the center of town is where locals can shoot hoops and have a picnic. Some of the world’s most magnificent vistas are minutes away. “In Waipio, you’re a 25-minute drive from the north shore, where the beaches speak for themselves,” says Matthews.
