Waite Park has retail, residential and recreation near St. Cloud
Waite Park is a suburb of St. Cloud, Minnesota, and a community of roughly 8,000. While St. Cloud is known as the Granite City due to the area’s stone production, many of the quarries are located in Waite Park. The mines that are still open employ residents, while the closed quarries have turned into recreation hotspots. Aside from the industry, Waite Park offers suburban character with residential and retail-focused areas. “I love the little pockets within Waite Park,” says Debbie Niemeyer, a broker with Coldwell Banker and a lifelong resident of the area. “But it’s just made up of a lot of different types of homes, apartments and businesses.”

Older homes and new developments make up the area
There are two main residential areas within Waite Park. “The north part of Waite Park has several blocks of that older housing stock,” Niemeyer says. “Then, way on the south end is where the new developments, the newer split levels and a lot of patio homes are.” Homes sit along gridded blocks north of Division Street, and the area’s cottages, farmhouses and ranch-style builds are often from as early as the 20th century. These sell from the mid-$100,000s to high $200,000s. Newer houses, generally from the 1990s and onward, make up a cluster of suburban subdivisions south of the city’s shopping areas. The ranch and bilevel-style homes typically go between the low $200,000s and high $300,000s. The southern area also features several apartment complexes.

Quarry Park Scientific and Natural Area encompasses several granite mines that closed in the early 20th century. The 323-acre park includes paths and observation decks among the quarry ponds and is a spot for cross-country skiing. Rivers Edge Park has several baseball and softball fields, a splash pad and pickleball courts. The area also has a handful of hockey rinks, indoor and outdoor, for winter sports. “In real estate, we tell people to embrace all the seasons when they move here,” Niemeyer says. “Get out the snow shoes and enjoy all the seasons. There’s lots of outdoor hockey, ice rinks and sledding hills, but also biking in the summer.”
Waite Park residents can visit Quarry Park and Nature Preserve to walk rustic trails or swim in abandoned quarries.
