Howe Homestead
Suburban Neighborhood in Walnut Creek, California
Contra Costa County 94596, 94598
Ranch- and Craftsman-style homes
Modern ranch- and Craftsman-style homes make up the majority of Howe Homestead’s housing stock. Special touches like barrel-tile roofs and stone facades help each home stand out amid the neighborhood’s thick cover of pines and oaks. But single-family homes aren’t the only option here. Dobrinich says condos are just as popular in this area, providing an affordable option for first-time buyers who want to stay close to the city. Regardless of housing type, though, Dobrinich stresses Walnut Creek’s fast-paced market. “If a property is desirable, it’s likely to sell over asking with multiple offers, even with the current high interest rates,” he says. Condos usually list in the $600,000 to $700,000 range, although there are luxury options available for quite a bit more. Single-family homes on spacious lots average just over $1 million but can list as high as $3 million.Scenic trails and a community garden at Howe Homestead Park
At Howe Homestead Park, neighbors work side-by-side tending to 48 plots in a large community garden. The park is also a popular spot for hikers to begin the 10-mile journey to the crest of Mount Diablo, which sits nearly 4,000 feet above sea level. Civic Park rests at the edge of downtown Walnut Creek, creating an easy and scenic bike route into the city. This 10-acre park features a bright red and blue playscape, a community center and tree-shaded trails that showcase local art installations.Learning in Howe Homestead's schools
Students in Howe Homestead are zoned for the Walnut Creek Elementary School District and the Acalanes Union High School District, which both include schools maintaining grades of A or better on Niche. After attending Walnut Heights Elementary School, students can move on to Walnut Creek Intermediate School. At Las Lomas High School, interested students can participate in the well-attended Speech and Debate Team or join one of the other 70-plus clubs offered. An art and wine festival and annual Oktoberfest
Just a few miles north of the neighborhood, Heather Farm Park welcomes residents and visitors for the annual Walnut Creek Art & Wine Festival, a tradition heading into its fourth decade. This 100-acre park also hosts private events throughout the year at its reservable picnic areas. With an all-abilities playground, fishing pond and skate park, it’s a top destination for kids’ birthday parties. At Civic Park, residents come together in the fall for Walnut Creek Oktoberfest, which lasts for two days and features plenty of music, crafts, food and, of course, beer.
Navigating Walnut Creek and commuting to Silicon Valley
Howe Homestead’s walkable residential streets and proximity to downtown make the area easy to navigate on foot, and abundant trails offer safe routes for bikers. Public transportation is also available in the downtown area. For commuters, Interstate 680 offers a direct, roughly 50-mile route to Silicon Valley, while state Route 24 leads into Oakland. I-680 also leads past major hospitals like San Ramon Regional Medical Center, which is just 12 miles south.
Shopping and dining in downtown Walnut Creek
With proximity to downtown Walnut Creek, residents have no shortage of shopping and dining opportunities close to home. Across the street from Safeway, which sits on the outer edge of downtown and provides the closest grocery option, Broadway Plaza serves as the retail center for the community with more than 80 storefronts. “You do still have options if you’re looking to avoid the downtown traffic,” Dobrinich says, pointing out that many residents also take advantage of The Orchards at Walnut Creek shopping center, which is less than 5 miles up Ygnacio Valley Road and anchored by a Safeway and a Petco.
