Douglass is a growing D.C. neighborhood
The Douglass community of Washington, D.C., is named after the famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who lived just 2 miles away in the Anacostia neighborhood. As prices rise and new construction pops up, the community still maintains its rich culture.
2000s townhomes, 1920s/1930s Craftsmans and Foursquares
Lush lawns, tree-lined sidewalks and murals in the parks give the neighborhood a refreshing brightness. There are a handful of older homes, but for the most part, the housing stock comprises townhomes built after 2000. The neighborhood's median price of $430,000 fetches a three-bedroom townhome with a little bit of yard space out front. Four-bedroom townhomes with about the same size yard as the three-bedroom sell for about $500,000. For $640,000, there are contemporary townhomes available, bearing exteriors that mimic the brick facades of historic properties. "These newer developments are becoming more popular, and there's more coming." says Sonya Abney, a Realtor who's sold multiple homes in the area. There are some detached single-family homes in the neighborhood built in the 1920s and ‘30s. These Craftsmans and Foursquares go for about $500,000 and typically have bigger yards than the townhomes nearby. The market here is hot. “Like every community in D.C., homes here go quick,” says Abney. “You have to put in an offer as soon as your heart is set on one.”
