Options to rent or buy
Most properties in Fort Dupont are apartments, and most residents rent. However, those looking to buy can find townhouses or duplexes in the $300,000 to $500,000 range. Single-family homes come in various styles, including ranch-style, American Foursquare and simple bungalows. Chain-link fences enclose sloped front yards; awnings shade front stoops, and, here and there, carports cover vehicles. A fully renovated, semidetached 1920s townhouse lists for nearly $600,000, while a two-bedroom brick-attached townhouse from the 1940s goes on the market for nearly $400,000. New construction, including raised ranch-style houses and custom-design builds, typically costs around $800,000. “The homes are appreciating in value,” says Randy Louis, CEO of Block Shoppers, a local organization aimed at empowering people to build generational wealth through real estate. “A lot of people are looking to buy, and many hold onto their homes.”The Fort Dupont Summer Concert Series
The Fort Dupont Summer Concert Series at Fort Dupont Park has been a community staple since 1972, drawing visitors from all over the city. Locals pack lawn chairs and picnic blankets, gather their families and friends and listen to music from national and regional artists at the outdoor amphitheater. “It’s a great time to be in the community and enjoy live entertainment with your neighbors,” Louis says. “It’s a vibrant time, especially in the summer with good weather. There’s good jazz and R&B – all different genres – good food. It’s the epitome of D.C. culture.”Fort Dupont Park, baseball and ice rinks
Fort Dupont Park is the former grounds of a Civil War-era earthwork that defended Washington, D.C., from the Confederate army. Today, it’s home to the unpaved Fort Circle Hiker-Biker Trail, which runs 7 miles, a playground, picnic areas and the popular summertime Fort Dupont Concert Series. The Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy is also in Fort Dupont Park. It provides free academic and athletic programming, including an after-school program and travel softball and baseball teams, to the youth of Wards 7 and 8. The academy does a lot of community outreach, including selling low-cost farmers market bags and operating a teaching garden for kids. The Fort Dupont Ice Arena and the Fort Dupont Outdoor Pool are also in the park. Nearby Fort Chaplin Park is also a former Civil War earthwork. It now stands as a place for the community to spend time outdoors and learn about history through informative signs. The Benning Stoddert Recreation Center on First Street has a computer lab, fitness center, sports courts and more. The Anacostia River and the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail are nearby, providing locals with waterfront recreation.Getting around D.C.
Locals can cross the John Philip Sousa Bridge or Whitney Young Memorial Bridge to reach the heart of the nation’s capital by car. “You can get to all quadrants of D.C. in about 15 to 20 minutes,” Louis explains. To access the city using public transportation, the nearest Metro station is on Benning Road, and there are bus stops throughout the neighborhood.Students get college-ready at Anacostia High School
Students are zoned for District of Columbia Public Schools and can attend Kimball Elementary School, which receives a C from Niche. Then, they can attend Sousa Middle School and Anacostia High School, which both receive C-minus scores. Anacostia has a College & Career Center to prepare students for future employment through hands-on learning and programming.Amenities nearby
There’s not much by way of dining and shopping in Fort Dupont; however, locals are surrounded by amenities outside their neighborhood. Along Minnesota Avenue, just north, locals will find a plethora of commercial conveniences tucked between apartment buildings and single-family homes. Norma’s Breakfast is popular in the mornings, serving homestyle cooking before closing at 2:30 daily, and nearby Safeway guarantees locals can quickly grab groceries. But Fort Dupont’s location ensures residents aren’t far from everything they need. “You can go right up to H Street, where they have the streetcars, bars and restaurants,” Louis explains. “It’s near Maryland too, right next to Prince George County, where there are a lot of restaurants and entertainment options.”
