Waukon's a small rural town with a lot of character
Waukon is the county seat of Allamakee County, and its largest city. A small town of just under 4,000 residents, its role as the cultural, administrative and retail hub of the county means it offers slightly more shopping and dining options than other towns of a similar size. The town is also home to the only full-service hospital in the area, Veterans Memorial, which is one of the largest employers in town.
Traditional small town homes
The town's housing inventory contains an eclectic mix of early- to mid-20th century options, including ranch-style homes and a variety of traditional two-story styles. Most homes are clustered within the official city limits and set on traditional, gridded lots. The land outside of town is almost exclusively agricultural and rarely goes up for sale. Move-in-ready homes usually sell for between $95,000 and $270,000.
Allamakee Community Schools
The Allamakee Community School District oversees Waukon's public schools. East Elementary gets a B-plus from Niche, and West Elementary gets a B-minus. Waukon Middle gets a B-plus. Waukon High also gets a B-plus and offers college-level courses through a partnership with Northeast Iowa Community College.
A large city park and nearby wilderness areas
Waukon City Park, the town's major green space, offers walking trails, athletic fields, a fishing pond and a playground. It's also home to the town aquatic center, a campground and an RV site. The park hosts a number of local events throughout the year, most notably the summer Music in the Park performance series. The Waukon Golf & Country Club, located near the center of town, is a nine-hole course that's open to the public and known for its laid-back atmosphere. Hunting, fishing and boating are all popular pastimes in the area. It's a 17-mile drive to Yellow River State Forest and the Mississippi River to the southeast, while the Upper Iowa River Access Area — popular with canoers and kayakers — is 12 miles northwest of town.
The retail hub for much of the county
Waukon has three main commercial corridors: Main Street, Ninth Street, and state Route 9. Ninth Street is home to all three of the area's supermarkets: Fareway, Dollar Fresh Market and Quillin's Food Ranch. There are also a number of smaller specialty food stores around the area, like Pop's Produce, which are largely supplied by area farmers. Waukon's quaint downtown is centered around the intersection of Main Street and Route 9. The walkable and well-maintained area is home to a sizable roster of locally-owned shops and restaurants, including the Town Theater and Pizza Pub.
Home to the Allamakee County Fair
The Allamakee County Fair, held every July at the fairgrounds in north Waukon, is the largest annual event in the county. It features livestock shows, a grandstand program and 4-H competitions that draw people from across the region. Waukon Corn Days follows soon after in early August, offering downtown sidewalk sales, live music and all-you-can-eat sweet corn.
Long drives to urban centers and airports
Iowa highways 9 and 76 are the main routes in and out of town. There is no regular public transportation, and locals rely almost exclusively on cars to get around. It's about 50 miles by car to La Crosse, and over 90 miles to the nearest larger cities, Rochester and Cedar Rapids. La Crosse Airport offers regular flights to and from Chicago, but locals often choose to fly out of Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, as it's the nearest airport with more than two regular routes.
