Two convenient Columbus suburbs

Community and convenience come together in Lake Darby, which contains two subdivisions bordered by Big Darby Creek. "Both the Westpoint and Lake Darby Estates communities are surrounded by farms and cornfields," says Andrena Boyd with CRT Realtors. She's a Westpoint resident of 17 years and counting who raised her family in the neighborhood and has also sold over 70 homes there. "It's great because you get the 'country living' feeling in a community subdivision just 7 minutes from great dining and shopping. Everybody's very friendly, and we all help each other. Someone's dog went missing, they posted about it on the community Facebook page, and everyone chipped in to help find it."

Exploring Westpoint and Lake Darby Estates

Lake Darby's home styles are consistent between Westpoint and Lake Darby Estates. On a drive through each community, residents pass an array of Split-levels, Modern Craftsman and ranch-style homes. If a home doesn't already have a two-car garage, it will likely have a shed to house vehicles come winter. Streetlamps, uniform sidewalks, and ample yard space make walking safe and easy. Prices are also balanced between each area, with most homes ranging from $200,000 to $400,000.

Columbus Metro parks to the north and south

Lake Darby sits just far beyond Columbus's urban core for nature to take center stage. The community is within 5 miles of giant parks to the north and south. Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park includes a nature center and more than 7,000 acres of forested and grassy land to traverse, some occupied by reintroduced bison. Locals explore more hiking trails, creek and lake access, and vast grassy expanses at Prairie Oaks Metro Park, a favorite of birdwatchers and fishing enthusiasts. Meanwhile, the colorful playground at Jefferson Township Community Park is a 4-mile drive east into the village of West Jefferson.

Local events and Prairie Oaks Metro Park tours

Prairie Oaks Metro Park hosts guided hikes for specific flora and fauna and seasonal family-friendly events. While downtown Columbus has an array of activities and attractions, residents can also look forward to events right in their neighborhood where they can connect with their neighbors. "I personally sponsor a Christmas lights contest for the homes and a Halloween contest," Boyd shares about her experience in Westpoint. "My family and I put flags in each yard on the Fourth of July, and we have block parties in the summer with slushie machines."

Getting from West Jefferson to Columbus

Being surrounded by beautiful farmland but no public transportation makes Lake Darby a car-dependent community. Luckily, easy access to Interstate 70 means locals can reach OhioHealth Doctors Hospital and Emergency Department in just 5.5 miles. Continuing on the freeway takes residents into downtown Columbus in 18 miles. By exiting onto Interstate 670, they reach John Glenn Columbus International Airport in just over 23 miles.

Dining in West Jefferson, shopping in Columbus

Shopping is scarce within the neighborhood, but close highway access gives Lake Darby locals a straight shot to Columbus. They can stop at the Kroger off U.S. Route 40 for groceries and gas on a return trip from downtown or make an Aldi run at the Market at Hilliard Mall 7 miles away before stopping by Michaels or Target. Ten Mile Inn, the self-proclaimed "home of the best bike night in central Ohio," sits off Route 40 south of the neighborhood and offers bikers and non-bikers a friendly atmosphere to grab a drink and a burger with friends. The streets of West Jefferson offer a main stretch of choices for eating out as close to home as locals to this neighborhood can get.

Lake Darby's upcoming park project

Currently, Lake Darby residents need to drive a few miles to reach a park—but that is looking to change soon. "The Prairie Township is in the works to build a new community park with a walking trail in the neighborhood," Boyd says.
