Weybridge is a Vermont farming community close to Middlebury
A quaint covered bridge welcomes residents to Weybridge, a small rural town in western Vermont. Although farmland, forests and nature preserves make up most of the landscape, the town is less than 5 miles from Middlebury, one of the state’s premier colleges. “It almost functions like a suburb of Middlebury because everything is centered around Middlebury as far as shops and restaurants go,” says Lisa Grover, outreach and relocation coordinator for the Addison County Chamber of Commerce. Highly rated public schools are also a major pull to the area.
Forests and fields border homes on sizable land parcels
Fields and meadows run alongside Weybridge’s two-lane roads, often revealing a view of the surrounding mountains. Some side roads are densely forested, with no houses for miles. “It’s a very rural area, and the houses are all spread out,” Grover says. Lot sizes are typically large, most measuring over a full acre. Ranch-style homes and farmhouses go for $250,000 to $500,000, while larger luxury builds might fetch $600,000 to $700,000.
Weybridge Elementary School has a Niche grade of A
Weybridge Elementary School receives an A from Niche, which ranks it the second-best public elementary school in Vermont. Students move to Middlebury Union Middle School, rated B-minus. Most then attend B-plus-rated Middlebury Union High School. However, thanks to Vermont’s school-choice program, students can apply to any high school in the state. Middlebury College is just a few miles down the road.
Hiking, spelunking and strolling through Weybridge parks
At Otter Creek Gorge, miles of hiking trails weave through dense forests and over narrow footbridges, past churning waterfalls. For shorter and easier walks, families head to Hurd Grassland, a 55-acre bird habitat preserved by the Middlebury Area Land Trust. Leashed dogs are welcome, but owners are advised to hold tight as rabbits, deer and the occasional black bear hang around the trail. From May through October, equine enthusiasts can visit Morgan Horse Farm to meet the newest foals while learning more about the Morgan breed. Experienced climbers and spelunkers can explore Weybridge Cave State Park, home to the largest cave in Vermont. The descent begins with a nearly 50-foot drop, so specialized climbing equipment is a must.
Vermont Route 23 paves the way to Middlebury
Vermont Route 23, also known as Weybridge Road, is the town’s primary thoroughfare. The centrally located street paves the way for the 4-mile drive to Middlebury and Porter Medical Center, the closest hospital. Roughly 35 miles north, Burlington International Airport offers direct flights to more than a dozen U.S. destinations.
Retail and restaurant options in nearby Middlebury
With no retail or restaurant options in Weybridge, most residents head to Middlebury to shop or dine out. Numerous coffee shops, cafés and pubs can be found near the college campus. Local supermarket chains Shaw’s and Hannaford are also nearby, along with a natural food co-op.
Potential flooding near Otter Creek and the Lemon Fair River
Much of Weybridge’s central section is prone to flooding, especially during spring snowmelt and periods of heavy rain. Flooding can affect traffic patterns and homes near Otter Creek and the Lemon Fair River.
