A small woodland village only 10 miles from PAX River Naval Air Station
Wildewood, a master-planned community in California, Maryland, where State Routes 235 and 4 meet, is well named for the wild woodland that still gives this neighborhood its small village feel. Community pools, scenic bike paths, parks and playgrounds also create a resort-style atmosphere. “Wildewood is sought-after for its recreational facilities and central location,” says Chris Norris Jr., broker-owner of Topside Realty, who lives nearby in Leonardtown and was born and raised on Maryland’s Western Peninsula. “Its community pool is a big draw. Solomons Island nearby has boat rentals, a fishing pier and many restaurants.” Wildewood is also a prime location for military personnel who work at PAX River Naval Air Station, 10 miles away, says Alex Saenger, a Realtor with Keller Williams Capital Properties. “For one military client, we looked all over the area, and Wildewood was the closest to the base with the best price point.” Saenger, who has worked in the market for over 20 years, lives outside Washington, D.C., and knows city-dwellers who purchase homes in Wildewood, a 60-mile drive south, for weekend getaways.

From community amenities to megalodon shark teeth
A community pool complex, lodge, tennis courts, basketball courts and playground are all central to neighborhood life. The aquatic center features two multi-lane Olympic-sized swimming pools, two splash pools for children and a kiddie pool. The lodge next door is often used for family gatherings, bridal showers, receptions, birthdays and the like. “My sister-in-law had her baby shower there,” Norris says. Bike paths and public parks are scattered throughout, such as the community’s recreation complex with a baseball field and open fields. Subdivisions within Wildewood also have their own private amenities, such as swimming pools and tennis courts.
Just 7 miles east, Solomons is an island where visitors can jet ski, water ski, paddleboard and kayak. “The water is gentler there, good for kids,” Saenger says. The public pier is designed for fishing, and Solomons Yacht Club has the largest marina on the island. Saenger also recommends Calvert Cliffs State Park, 13 miles east of Wildewood. “You can go to the beach and find megalodon shark teeth,” he says. “The Calvert Marine Museum in Johnstown has teeth on display found on the beach in the park.”
The Wildewood Community Pool is a great place to cool off and let the kids play.
The tennis courts also have pickleball nets and markings in Wildewood.

Wildewood homes fit a range of price points and needs
The original developer of Wildewood built the Wildewood Center, a shopping mall along Three Notch Road, and its adjacent office park, where Boeing and General Dynamics have offices, to accommodate the military and encourage all the retail that is now part of the area. The homes, too, were equally well-conceived to fit a range of price points. Well-maintained colonial-style homes can be found throughout the neighborhood. Those on the eastern side, built in the 1970s and 1980s, sell for between $300,000 and $550,000. Those farther west are newer and higher-end. They can list for $450,000 to $725,000. Townhouses built throughout can range from $250,000 to $450,000. Condos between the Wildewood Center and St. Mary’s Marketplace, also on Three Notch Road, run from $150,000 to $300,000. Three-bedroom Cape Cods, many with attached garages, are common in the western portion of the neighborhood. They list for between $300,000 and $450,000.

Hunting for Easter eggs and listening to live music at the lodge
In March, the Wildewood Community Association hosts the Annual Easter Egg Hunt on the lawn of the community lodge, where children can win prizes if they find golden eggs. Also on the lawn, the community can enjoy a summer music series every other Saturday evening starting in late May. The series also draws local businesses, like Hicks Family Creations, which specializes in charcuterie boxes. The community comes out for other major holidays, too, like Halloween and Christmas, with a trick-or-treat tailgate party in late October and a craft market with Santa in early December.
In the middle of all the fun is the Wildewood Community Association's offices.
Getting around Wildewood and the Western Peninsula
As a small community of fewer than 2,000 homes, Wildewood is walkable to central amenities like the pool and lodge. With little through traffic, the community is also ideal for running and biking. “Someone is always out jogging, and you often see kids riding bikes. Paths and bike lanes are on every road,” Norris says. State Route 235 connects Wildewood to the PAX River Naval Air Station, a 10-mile commute south, or Washington, D.C., a 60-mile ride north. STS Transit buses follow this highway, too. State Route 4 also runs next to Wildewood and connects drivers to Leonardtown, about 10 miles west. The closest hospital is MedStar St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown. Solomons, Johnstown and Calvert Cliffs State Park are all on Route 4 to the east. Wilde is also less than 2 miles from the St. Mary’s County Regional Airport.

Shopping and dining along Route 235
Wildewood Center is anchored by JCPenney and Belk. It features several retailers and restaurants, such as Wildewood Pastry Shop, a family-owned European bakery with breakfast and dessert items and cakes for special occasions. Okada Japanese Steak and Seafood is another local favorite. It has a sushi bar and teppanyaki tables. Farther south, First Colony Shopping Center in California features Harris Teeter, Giant Food and several big box stores, including Lowe’s, Target and Walmart. The California Farmers Market is just past the shopping center in the BAE Systems parking lot. It’s held every Saturday morning from April to November.
“The Tiki Bar and Grill in Solomons is open annually and draws crowds,” Norris says. “The island has several restaurants, not much retail and many tourist attractions. Many places are right on the water. There’s also a couple of ice cream shops — a good place to spend the afternoon or evening.” Solomons is across the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge off Route 4.
