Williamsville, a village with flourish and familiarity

History, local business and nature take precedence in the village of Williamsville, located within Amherst, to give the neighborhood its unique personality. “The village is only one square mile, but we have six parks within that space, and an amazing, walkable historic district that has businesses still open from the 1800s,” says Sue Canell, administrator for the Williamsville Village Hall. “The historic sites and Main Street really give it a distinct feel.” From the original Williamsville Christian Church to the Water Mill Complex and designated historic homes, the village tallies up 34 landmark sites. With plentiful community events and well-maintained natural areas, Williamsville is small but mighty.

The thriving and unique Main Street

Along Main Street and Route 324 is where residents can find most commercial and business areas, with big names such as Walgreens and Wegmans alongside national bank locations, medical offices and chain restaurants. “Main Street is where you get the most walkability, and it’s always busy. The local shops are a big hit with the residents,” Canell says. From the delicate crafting at Amy’s Fine Jewelry to the relaxing studio of I Am Yoga, there’s quite a range of selections. Breweries and restaurants have found plenty of loyal customers, but none with such loyalty as Glen Park Tavern. Operating since 1887 and still using the original mahogany bars, it’s a landmark staple that consistently serves great drinks and classic American fare.

Local produce and community pride

The community is extremely active throughout the year with events, from the weekly farmers’ market to Music on Main, a gathering every Thursday where people come to Main Street to listen to live music and hang out. “Old Home Days is probably our biggest event, it’s a 4-day festival with rides, games, food and beer vendors. It’s a hit,” Canell says. “It’s not as well-known, but the Glen Park Art Festival is amazing, too. It’s a great way to support our locals.”

A blend of historic and modern meet in Williamsville

A bird’s eye view of Williamsville reveals thickets of treetops that shade the homes, ever-changing with the seasons. Properties sit along laidback neighborhood streets, and residents carefully tend to their gardens and lawns. Considering the village’s long-standing history, homes span a wide range of construction periods, from colorful Craftsman houses to midcentury Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals. Though less common, contemporary townhouses and new traditional single-family homes have popped, mixing in modern architecture to join the vintage. The median selling price for single-family homes sits at $335,000, while townhouses spike up to $385,000, most likely due to them being recently constructed.
