Harbor Gateway is a growing, mixed-use community in southern Los Angeles. It’s close to Torrance — known for its beach, parks and shopping — and major job centers, which has made it increasingly popular. Another draw is that housing costs tend to be lower than in the surrounding areas.

The median sale price in Harbor Gateway is in the low $800,000s, which is below the medians in the neighboring cities of Lomita and Torrance. “You’re right next to Torrance, so many people come there because they get outpriced in Torrance,” says Kevin Park, Realtor with Keller Williams Realty, who has lived in Greater LA for more than 50 years. “It’s still a nice little area, but you get more for the dollar than in Torrance.”
You might find a smaller home from the low $600,000s to the mid-$900,000s, while larger ones usually range from the mid-$800,000s to around $1.3 million. Townhouses and condos typically run from the mid-$300,000s to the mid-$800,000s.
Housing options in Harbor Gateway
More than half of Harbor Gateway residents rent, and you’ll see plenty of apartment buildings, especially along major roads and near freeway onramps. The area also has neighborhoods that feel more suburban, with large lots, green lawns and private driveways. In these pockets, single-family homes are common — often midcentury bungalows that have been updated or expanded. Proximity to Torrance and a convenient setting are also driving new growth in the community. “A lot of people are moving there, so there’s a bunch of development,” Park says. “They just added several townhomes.”

From “shoestring strip” to a modern travel hub
On a map of LA, Harbor Gateway’s long, thin shape makes it easy to spot, and people originally called it the “shoestring strip” because it looks a bit like a string with a knot in the middle. Park explains that the area was added to Los Angeles as a bridge between the city and San Pedro, an important fishing and trade center. Once that connection was made, LA was able to annex San Pedro and take control of the port. Harbor Gateway is still a crucial link to the harbor region, both for trade and commuter travel.

Freeway access is one of Harbor Gateway’s biggest perks. No matter where you are in the community, it’s just a short drive to several major roads, and Interstate 110 runs right through the northern section, which makes commuting more straightforward. From the center of the neighborhood, you’re 15 miles or less from several job centers, including Downtown LA, the Port of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Torrance.
