Residential lots in Historic South Central are average-sized, and many properties have decorative fencing or walls. "There are Craftsman homes built from 1905 to [the] 1920s, times when homes had tons of detail in the moldings, real wood siding, leaded glass, built-in armoires and beautiful attributes you won't find in newer homes," Hughes says. Other styles include bungalows with Spanish Revival elements like clay tile roofing, in addition to the occasional modern build and condos. Homebuyers can expect lower housing prices than other nearby neighborhoods. Single-family homes generally cost between $500,000 and $900,000. "Pricing is still relatively good," Hughes says. "Homes in this area are in the process of being updated. You're typically looking at under $700,000 for a three-bedroom, two-bath home with some updates."Enjoying Trinity Recreation Center and Central Avenue Jazz Park
Trinity Recreation Center offers resources like athletic leagues, an indoor gym and after-school programs. The grounds include a 3,000-square-foot skate park opened in 2021 with landscaping upgrades and shade trees. Central Avenue Jazz Park is a small green space commemorating the neighborhood's history. Several markets and shops pepper the Historic South Central community. There are two Superior Grocers within the neighborhood, along San Pedro Street. The Central Avenue Farmers' Market, offering fresh produce from regional farmers, is held on Tuesdays. The community's many eateries lean toward Latin American-style options like Sonsonate Grill and Tire Shop Taqueria. Delicious at The Dunbar serves a fusion of soul food, Creole and Mexican offerings on the first floor of the long-standing Dunbar Hotel.Central Avenue Jazz Festival is a growing tradition
In September, locals gather along the community's western edge for the Central Avenue Jazz Festival. The free event has been held for over 25 years, showcasing multiple performance stages and shopping pavilions. The local hangout, Kultur Lounge, hosts events like music and poetry nights, Afrobeat Fridays and Art and Soul Sunday Groove.Many options with the Los Angeles Unified School District
Children in the neighborhood may attend public schools like Quincy Jones Elementary, named in honor of the entertainer and record company executive. Earning a C-plus rating from Niche, the school emphasizes learning through jazz music and other creative programs. William Jefferson Clinton Middle has a C-plus. The public Santee Education Complex, rated a B-plus, is open to grades nine through 12. Older students may attend the private University of Southern California or Los Angeles Trade Technical College. The community college offers over 80 career-technical programs and transfer guarantees with the University of California and other colleges and universities.Driving along Interstates 10 and 110
Edged by two major highways, Interstates 10 and 110, commutes to Downtown LA, about 3 miles away. Here, locals will find the nearest major medical facility, Dignity Health- California Hospital Medical Center. Like much of the metro area, Historic South Central is has heavy traffic, especially during peak travel times.
