A neighborhood with a lot of history
In the early- to mid-20th century, Mid-City Angelenos in boxy suits and fedoras and A-line skirts lined up along Pico Boulevard to catch the old P Line of the Los Angeles Railway to what was then the hypermodern business district of Downtown LA. The Los Angeles Railway is long-defunct, but the Los Angeles Metro is striving to replace what was lost. These days, commuters queue at the new Metro station at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Vermont Avenue to catch the B-Line or the D-Line to their own jobs in this sprawling City of Angels. “The light rail was a gift to the community. It goes right through Mid-City to Santa Monica Pier and to Downtown and the Civic Center,” says Charlie Clarke, a longtime LA resident and local Realtor from Compass. “A lot of people moving to LA for the first time look in Mid-City because it’s less expensive than Miracle Mile to the north and it’s centrally located,” says Clark. “Prices have gone up exponentially as the neighborhood has become more crowded.”
Historic homes and modern mansions
Developers built most of the area’s homes from the mid-1920s to the 1930s. Several Tudor houses and cottages in English styles are scattered around the neighborhood, while the neighborhood’s Craftsman homes emphasize simple architecture and clean lines. Most of Mid-City’s Spanish homes have spacious floor plans and large yards, perfect for entertaining guests or cultivating a flowerbed or vegetable garden. “It’s got a great location, a real suburban feel, and you’re close to great dining and nightlife spots like West Adams and Miracle Mile,” says Realtor Jose Prats of AKG, who has lived and worked in the area for over a decade. Mid-City’s historic bungalows generally sell for $1.3 to $1.9 million, while more spacious modern homes in the neighborhood typically sell for between $2 and $3 million.
