What sets Alcott Park apart is its namesake, a 17-acre green space that separates quiet streets from bustling Interstate 41. Amenities at Alcott Park
Alcott Park is a well-maintained green space with a large, central field encircled by a walking path 1/3 of a mile long. Amenities include tennis courts, an indoor community room, a playground and, seasonally, a splash pad. "It's quiet and off the beaten path, but it's a huge park," says Milwaukee Alderman Mark Borkowski. "And residents don't have to drive to get there." Alcott Park is used year-round for spring picnics, beating the summer heat, or snowball fights. But the best time to visit Alcott Park, per Borkowski, is Independence Day. "We always have Fourth of July fireworks," he says. In addition, the new Powerline Trail recently opened just south of the park, connecting runners and bikers with the county-wide Oak Leaf Trail system.

Tidy grids of low-lying homes
Most of Alcott Park's streets are residential and divided into long grids. The neighborhood developed between the 1950s and 70s, and most homes date back to that original housing boom. Architecture styles include midcentury modern ranch styles, tutor-inspired cottages and larger split levels. Smaller homes under 2,000 sq. ft. start around $250,000, and prices get up to $350,000 for new renovations and larger floor plans. Most homes include a detached garage, and tidy front lawns are lined by sidewalks and decorative trees. "The houses here have a sort of nostalgia about them — they remind people of the type of homes they grew up in," says Lothair Lambrecht, an agent with Realty Executive who has several years of experience selling on Milwaukee's south side.

Walk to elementary school
Even if they live in the opposite corner of the neighborhood, kids in Alcott Park can usually walk to class at Alcott School in less than 15 minutes. This public school accommodates kindergarten through eighth grade and gets a C-minus rating from Niche. The elementary partners with several organizations: the Skylight Music Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theater and Junior Achievement of Wisconsin, a nonprofit focused on work readiness and financial stability. Kids are zoned for priority enrollment at Wedgewood Park School, rated C-minus, and Hamilton High School, rated C. But Milwaukee's school system allows parents to apply to any other school within the district, and there are also plenty of magnet and charter options.

Downtown and airport access
Living on the south side, residents have easy access to the Milwaukee Mitchel International Airport, 10 miles east. The drive is a breeze, but homes sit far enough away that there is no airplane noise. Getting to Interstate 41 is easy, connecting commuters to downtown Milwaukee, 10 miles away. Ideally, the trip takes less than 20 minutes. But rush hour traffic can make the drive take more like 40 minutes. Residents similarly face a longer drive than most Milwaukee residents to reach the sandy shores of Lake Michigan. And though bus lines are convenient for getting around close to home, anything longer than a couple blocks is usually done by car.
Nearby shopping mall and apple orchard
Residents do most of their shopping and dining along Highway 100, which has a selection of eateries and a Target. And Southridge, two miles away, is the largest mall in Milwaukee. This far out from the city, residents enjoy nearby country amenities like Patterson's Orchard, 3 miles away. Patterson's offers apple picking and fall pumpkin patches. A bit further out that direction, there's a Costco.
