A five-bedroom, Colonial estate in upstate New York is on the market for $4.2 million, and it has ties to one of America's most successful Wall Street investors.

The estate, built in 1989, consists of two structures at 792-820 Old Post Road: the main house and a separate, smaller structure that houses an indoor squash court.

"The house was built for Carl Icahn," Angela Kessel of Houlihan Lawrence told Homes.com. "It was his mom's house. He built it for her, and he had the office and library built for when he visited his mom."

The Old Post home has five bedrooms and seven bathrooms across 7,388 square feet. Inside, there's a library and office space with wood walls and a private entrance. The home also has what Kessel calls the conservatory — a screened porch enclosed with Plexiglas panels.

The conservatory was a special gift room Icahn created for his mother, Kessel said.

"She loved the light, and she wanted a glass room," she said.

Carl Icahn is a Queens native and founder of Icahn Enterprises — which is the holding company for several businesses. Mostly known today as a billionaire investor an activist shareholder, Icahn spent a short time in 2017 as a special adviser to President Trump during his first administration.

Icahn and his mother played squash in the building from time to time, Kessel said. He spent half a million dollars constructing the space, and it's "a super cool little house" complete with its own heating and cooling system, she added.

Current owners have used property as a retreat

The former Icahn property sits within a part of New York known for historic architecture, horse farms, and homes plopped on large landscapes.

Bedford is a small village roughly 50 miles north of New York City founded in 1680 when Puritans from Stamford, Connecticut, settled there. Colonials, brick ranches, and Cape Cods make up a large swath of the housing stock. These days, New Yorkers retreat to Bedford when they want to escape the bustling big city and enjoy a slower and greener environment.

The current owners bought it from Icahn roughly 20 years ago. The owners do not live there; they have been using it as a guest house, Kessel said.

The current owners have other houses in their real estate portfolio and have decided to sell the Bedford home because they're not using it as much as they once did, Kessel said.
