The city of Atlanta is holding its third Affordable Housing Week conference highlighting programs and efforts designed to promote homeownership.

The event runs Monday through Wednesday and will focus on zoning, inspections, and financing. According to the city, it is free and open to residents and developers and will be held at the Atlanta Habitat for Humanity at 824 Memorial Drive SE.

In Atlanta and nationwide, record home prices and mortgage rates near 7% have shut many people out of homeownership. The share of first-time U.S. homebuyers between 2023 and 2024 reached an all-time low of 24%, according to the National Association of Realtors.

During the pandemic, apartment rents across the country soared. While those increases have leveled out, rents remain elevated.

Conference workshops are designed to address landlords, program compliance, neighborhood engagement, and Atlanta's permitting process. On Tuesday morning, Tarshema Harris, owner of iPIC Realty, will lead a presentation on maximizing undervalued land for affordable housing.

The event's final day will include the 2025 Homeownership Initiative, a custom workshop allowing participants to work directly with agencies, lenders, nonprofits and real estate professionals.

Registration for the conference is not required.
