A U.S. homebuilding heavyweight has started construction and launched sales at its first master-planned development in a northern Utah city overlooking the Wasatch Mountains.
D.R. Horton said Viridian in Salem, Utah, will include single-family houses, townhouses, cottages and homes for buyers 55 and older. Prices range from about $380,000 to more than $570,000, according to the company website.
The development is approximately 10 miles south of Provo, Utah, and about 55 miles south of the Salt Lake City capital.

The Arlington, Texas-based homebuilder said it has sold nearly 14,000 homes in Utah since entering the market in 1992. D.R. Horton is the largest U.S. homebuilder by sales, according to Builder magazine.
Planned amenities at Viridian include a pool, clubhouse, trails, pickleball courts, a 25-acre park with soccer fields and a recreational water feature with a sandy beachfront. The company did not release the number of homes planned.
"Salem is truly the best of both worlds with its beautiful, rural landscape and its proximity to Provo and the Silicon Slopes Business District," said Boyd Martin, D.R. Horton's Salt Lake division president, in a statement.
