One week into 2025, and the Washington, D.C.-area already closed on a near-record-breaking home sale.

A six-bedroom, 10-bathroom estate in the popular McLean, Virginia, suburb sold Tuesday for $17.5 million, making it the priciest home sale of the year so far, according to Homes.com. The sale comes about four months after the property was listed for $22.25 million.

With its hefty price tag, the home earned a spot among the most expensive home sales over the past 12 months in the Washington, D.C.-area that includes the city and its suburbs extending through Northern and Western Virginia, into parts of Maryland. It trails behind only a few $20 million-plus sales that closed in the latter half of 2024.

The McLean house contains more than 14,000 square feet of space and sits on 2 acres. Its manicured grounds include a granite courtyard, a rose garden, a pool and a koi pond. Inside, there are six fireplaces and a home gym, and above the garage is a fully finished guest suite.

Listing agent Mark Lowham of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty described the property as “a timeless estate with no peer” on Homes.com. Michael Rankin, also with TTR Sotheby’s International Realty, represented the buyer in the sale.

The sale also comes on the heels of the year’s first home sale over $10 million. A seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom estate in the same McLean neighborhood sold for $11.2 million on Jan. 2, according to Homes.com.

That property sold after just days on the market, Homes.com data showed. Will Thomas of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty represented the seller and Robert Hryniewicki, Adam Rackliffe, Christopher Leary and Micah Smith of HRL Partners at Washington Fine Properties represented the buyer.
