A pair of homebuilders have started sales at a project that's part of an $80 million redevelopment of an "All-America" city near the University of Georgia.
Monte Hewitt Homes and Bluepoint Construction Southeast are selling two-story townhouses in Watkinsville, Georgia, about 15 miles south of UGAs main campus in Athens. The 21 units at The Towns at Wire Park contain three or four bedrooms and are priced from the high $500,000s. The buildings said they plan to start sales later for their planned 47 single-family houses at the development.
Watkinsville, a town of about 3,000 residents 70 miles northeast of Atlanta, was recognized by the National Civic League as one of 10 All-America City award winners in 2024. The recognition goes to municipalities that "strengthen democracy through local action and innovation," according to the organization.
Towns at Wire Park is part of Wire Park, a 66-acre project that would replace a longtime wire manufacturing plant. Plans also call for it to include an amphitheater, 225,000 square feet of office and retail space, a baseball training facility and the area's first food hall.
Similar redevelopments are happening across the country, especially in areas where available land is limited. Developers are replacing old buildings with homes, shops, restaurants, food halls and apartments as part of "live-work-play" destinations.
