Rock star Tom Petty majorly upgraded from his two-room apartment with neighbors knocking on the wall when he bought his Malibu, California, compound in 1998. Now, the “sanctuary” is on the market for $19 million.
The seven-bedroom, 10-bathroom estate sits on 2.6 acres near Escondido Beach and includes ocean views, agent Pamela Van Ierland of Coldwell Banker wrote in a listing on CoStar’s Homes.com. It served as Petty’s primary residence from 1998 until his death in 2017.
The Pettys “considered this home to be their sanctuary, filled with magic, love, and music,” Ierland wrote. “It will make the next lucky guardian feel incredibly blessed.”

Petty, known as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and a solo artist, recorded several albums after moving into the Malibu estate. Ierland said he wrote some of his big hits on the property where he lived with his then-wife, Dana York.
The estate includes three buildings: a main house, Petty’s recording studio and a one-bedroom guest house.
In the Mediterranean-style main house is a music room where Petty liked to play piano and write his songs, according to Ierland. There are also five fireplaces, some of which were designed and renovated to match Petty’s style.
The studio includes a living room, two rehearsal rooms, two recording rooms and a full bathroom. Though it is no longer equipped with recording equipment, Ierland said it is still wired to accommodate a mixing board, or it could be used for something else, such as another guest house or a game room.

The property also includes a pool, pickleball court, several water fountains and gardens. There is also a gym as well as a massage and yoga room attached to the main house.
Malibu is known as an “iconic beach town” offering “unparalleled beachfront living,” according to Homes.com. Listings in the area range from $969,000 to $57.4 million, and the average home value is $4,653,666.
