Fruitvale
Global cuisines on International Boulevard
International Boulevard appropriately offers restaurants preparing cuisines from all over the world. Wahpepah’s Kitchen serves Native American dishes like blue cornbread and bison meatballs. Pupuseria Papa Chico highlights Salvadorean flavors in pupusas, pasteles and yucca fries. Opened in 1983, Bui Phong Bakery is a community landmark, making all its baked goods from scratch. Fruitvale Village is a mixed-use shopping and housing development adjacent to Fruitvale Station and the AC Transit bus station. The Village hosts the Fruitvale Farmer’s Market three days a week and is home to Fruitvale Public Market, a 7,000-square-foot space with 11 small businesses. Foodmaxx provides discounted groceries just off Fruitvale Avenue in the nearby neighborhood of Jingletown.Cozy homes mix with businesses and light industrial buildings
Many of Fruitvale’s houses were built in the early 1900s. “There are a lot of bungalows and all sorts of early to mid-20th century options, says Gunderman.” Those bungalows are tightly clustered with Victorians and some Mission Revivals along tree-dotted streets that spread in a fan pattern toward the Diamond District. These are smaller homes with 900 to 1,500 square feet of living space. Contemporary condos and apartments can be found near the East Bay’s Tidal Canal for those wanting views of the water as well as the Oakland Hills. Single-family homes sell for a median price of $600,000, while newer condos sell for around $700,000. Prices range from $575,000 to $725,000 for single-family homes, and condos range from $425,000 to $775,000.Union Point Park, playgrounds and recreation centers
Cesar Chavez Park is a true community space. The two-acre park was revitalized and renamed in 2002 through neighborhood efforts. Today, it has open space for soccer games, a playground and benches. Formerly known as Sanborn Park, Josie de la Cruz Park is named for an Oakland activist who worked in the community for over 40 years. It has a basketball court, a soccer field and the Carmen Flores Recreation Center. The center offers recreational programs for all age groups and a multi-purpose athletic field. Along the East Bay waterfront in Jingletown, Union Point Park occupies an old shipyard. The nine-acre area features scenic views, a nautical-themed playground and a network of multi-use trails. Looking out over the water to Alameda, the Wave Oculus Pier was built for public art displays and casting a fishing line.Global schools and urban academies

International Boulevard serves as Fruitvale’s main street, although Highway 185 and 29th Avenue are also busy thoroughfares. A local transportation hub, the neighborhood is home to a BART station and an AC Transit terminal, which operates numerous bus routes in and around the area. The train and significant roadways can be noisy during heavy travel times. Interstates 580 and 880 take travelers 16 miles to San Francisco or 40 miles to San Jose.
