Unfortunately, by that time, the Chula Vista boom had gone bust, and the first buyers didn’t appear until 1908 when Scottish immigrant William MacDonald and his wife, Jennie, came to California from Kansas. The MacDonald family owned the house for nearly 30 years, and although Jennie eventually moved next door to the Craftsman-style house she built, her son, William R., remained there until the late 1930s. An actor and writer, the younger MacDonald was also an amateur radio operator and installed the city’s first radio tower in the side yard. In the modern era, the house had its 15 minutes of fame as the scene of the 1986 San Diego Historical Society Designer Showcase, along with its backyard neighbor, the Garrettson-Frank House. The MacDonald house may be the oldest Land and Town Co. house on its original site and is distinctive for its columned front porch, pedimented box bay windows and decorative frieze and corbels. In near-original condition (the back porch was enclosed as part of a 1920s remodel) the MacDonald House is designated as Historic Site No. 44.
