A residential neighborhood with local amenities in Providence
Situated in northern Providence, Elmhurst has a community-oriented, residential atmosphere that maintains the lively energy of the city. “At one time, the city of Providence had a residency requirement, which meant that if you worked for the city, you had to live in the city. Elmhurst was where all the police officers, firefighters and schoolteachers lived. Because of that, it’s been a stable, ‘suburban-like’ community,” says Jim DeRentis, a Realtor with Residential Properties Limited and a fourth-generation Providence native. Fargnoli Park is a kid-friendly gathering space, and college students can be found on Providence College’s campus, while adults can meet at the local restaurants on Smith Street. Elmhurst hosts public schools and the Roger Williams Medical Center, and it’s also just 2 miles from downtown. From their residential community, residents enjoy convenient access to the vibrant city of Providence.

20th-century bungalows and Colonial Revivals on gridded streets
“Buyers can get a lot of ‘house’ for their money in that neighborhood. There are well-kept, modest homes on gridded, tree-lined streets. It’s a comfortable area,” DeRentis says. Most of the neighborhood’s homes were built in the early-to-mid 20th century and feature small grass lots with stone walkways and narrow driveways. Homebuyers can find bungalows for about $330,000 and Cape Cod homes with more modern renovations for $400,000. A renovated Colonial Revival property costs around $500,000, while a multi-family property costs between $650,000 and $750,000.
Try something new at Lasalle Bakery in Elmhurst, Providence.
Indulge in fresh-baked pastries from LaSalle Bakery
“LaSalle Bakery is a very popular bakery with two locations in the neighborhood,” DeRentis says. Residents can find sandwiches made with fresh-baked bread, as well as pastries, cannolis and decorated cakes. There’s also Zesty Bites for pizza and Mediterranean wraps, and Peruvian fare at Los Andes. To shop for groceries and essentials, residents can head to Chalkstone Supermarket or Aldi. Retail shopping is hard to come by in this residential neighborhood, but locals are 2 miles from the largest shopping mall in the city, Providence Place.
Entrance to Fargnoli Park
Gather for summer movie nights at Fargnoli Park or mingle with more of the city downtown
In the community, residents gather at close-knit neighborhood events in Fargnoli Park, like summer movie showings, kids’ yoga and an end-of-summer barbecue. The neighborhood benefits from its proximity to downtown Providence for larger events, like PVDFest, a three-day outdoor art festival held at 195 District Park. The city kicks off the holiday season with its Three Nights of Lights event, which features a tree lighting, a holiday market and light-up art installations. “Providence is a smaller city with interesting arts and culture; there’s a ballet company, the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and the Providence Performing Arts Center,” DeRentis says.

Career preparation begins at Providence schools
Students are zoned to the Providence School District, which offers middle and high school choice. Children may begin at Robert F. Kennedy Elementary, which has a C-plus grade from Niche. Students may advance to C-rated Nathanael Greene Middle and then to C-minus-rated Mount Pleasant High. At the high school, students can begin preparing for future careers with the school’s career and technical program, which includes pre-engineering and early childhood education concentrations. Students can apply to Providence Career and Technical High for further technical education options. Providence College offers a post-secondary learning option in Elmhurst.
Water park at Fargnoli Park
Cool off at the splash pad or relax in the green space at Fargnoli Park
At the heart of Elmhurst is Fargnoli Park, a communal green space with play structures, baseball fields and a summer concession stand. In the summer, neighbors can gather at the picnic tables, and kids can cool off at the park’s splash pad. There aren’t dedicated walking trails at the park or in the surrounding area, but sidewalk-lined streets allow residents to walk their dogs or get some exercise.
Kennedy Plaza
Hop on the RIPTA to get downtown or take the Amtrak to Boston
Sidewalk-lined streets allow residents to walk to local amenities, and the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority has bus stops concentrated on Smith Street and Admiral Street. Driving personal vehicles is very common as well; residents can drive east to merge onto Interstate 95 to travel 50 miles north to Boston or 180 miles southwest to New York City. Residents can also get to Boston or New York City by rail since the Amtrak station is 2 miles east of Elmhurst.
Chalkstone Market is an Elmhurst staple offering fresh meat and produce.
City conveniences in Elmhurst
The neighborhood benefits from its urban setting since residents do not have to travel far for amenities. The Roger Williams Medical Center sits on the neighborhood’s southern edge, and grocery stores can be found near its eastern and southern border. With multiple bus stops and proximity to downtown, commuters can easily travel throughout Providence.
