“The neighborhood was widely developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and it’s well preserved and well maintained,” DeRentis says. Historic homes in the neighborhood include Colonial Revivals and Queen Annes, among others, and come in single- and multi-family accommodations. The neighborhood also has condominiums and apartments in similar styles. Gladys Potter Park on Humboldt Avenue is a popular spot for families, as it has a playground with unconventional equipment like climbable animal statues. Blackstone Park Conservation District is a 45-acre natural woodland tucked away in the eastern corner of Wayland. Serving as somewhat of a ‘green buffer’ between city streets and the Seekonk River, the conservation district contains two ponds, an open meadow and wildlife habitats.

Public and private schooling options for students in Wayland
Students attending public schools in Wayland may start at Vartan Gregorian Elementary School, which earned a B grade from Niche. Vartan Gregorian partners with Brown University through events like the “Vartan Gregorian School Kickoff,” which brings in Brown athletes to interact with the students, and the “VG Science Conference,” which hosts presentations from university professors. Students continue to Nathan Bishop Middle School, which earned a C, and Hope High School, which earned a C-minus. The neighborhood also has private options: “The Croft School is very popular with young families,” DeRentis says. Wayland has several popular spots for residents to convene: “L’Artisan has a big outdoor patio which is a central meeting point. That’s a congregation point for your running club, rowing club, book club; it’s an active neighborhood,” DeRentis says. “And people love to be clustered around Wayland Square. It’s a highly sought-after retail node.” Neighborhood foodies also enjoy participating in Providence Restaurant Weeks. During mid-January and mid-July, restaurant-goers enjoy two weeks of fine dining at discounted rates at participating eateries.

Quick commutes to Downtown Providence or across the bridge to Massachusetts
“You see people out on the street all the time in Wayland. You do get people either employed at [Brown] University or [Rhode Island] Hospital because it’s close to both. There’s easy proximity downtown on the train to commute,” DeRentis says. The Providence train station is 1.5 miles from Wayland, and there is parking at the station. Wayland residents are also close to Interstate 95, the main north-south highway on the east coast, and Henderson Bridge (also known as the “Red Bridge”) crossing into Seekonk.Local restaurants include L’Artisan Cafe & Bakery and Mare Rooftop
“People in the neighborhood mostly like those independent restaurants that have popped up,” DeRentis says. L’Artisan Cafe & Bakery on Wayland Avenue serves sandwiches and coffees to pair with its decadent desserts. Mare Rooftop, located on Waterman Street, has a contemporary, glass-covered terrace and outside deck offering 360-degree views of Providence and the Seekonk River. Its menu offerings include local oysters and other seafood options, as well as pastas and pizza. “You can walk to Whole Foods, Eastside Marketplace and these wine shops people really like. It’s got something for everybody,” DeRentis says. Locals can find cheeses and other charcuterie staples to pair with their wine at East Side Cheese & Provisions.
