West Seventh in Saint Paul feels like an extension of downtown

Saint Paul ’s West Seventh neighborhood feels like a continuation of Downtown with its restaurants and walkable streets. The community’s friendly, welcoming atmosphere goes beyond its restaurant workers to the longtime residents of historic homes. You can meet friends for a drink and a round of trivia at one of the many breweries or unwind in the sunshine along the Mississippi River. Public transportation and nearby highways make it easy to get anywhere in the Twin Cities, with downtown Saint Paul right next to West Seventh and downtown Minneapolis about 10 miles away.

The neighborhood is known for its many, many restaurants

West Seventh has become the place to go for Saint Paul foodies, with restaurants that range from breakfast spots to popular burger joints. “West Seventh has a little bit of everything,” says Joe Lindsay, Realtor with Edina Realty. Here is just a taste of what’s available:

  • Mucci’s Italian, a Saint Paul favorite that locals simply call Mucci’s
  • Shamrock’s Grill and Pub, famous for its cheese-stuffed Juicy Nookie
  • Mancini’s, a steakhouse that’s been in the same family for generations
  • Day by Day Cafe, which serves classic diner-style breakfast on a backyard patio
  • A-Side Public House, which serves French and American food in a restored firehouse
“It sounds weird to say ‘hole in the wall,’ but there are some places that you drive by, and you don’t even know they are restaurants,” says Lindsay, who has lived in the neighborhood for over a decade. “But once you’re inside, it’s fantastic service, phenomenal food and great people... And I think that’s what West Seventh is. It’s just hospitable. Good people, great service and strong community.”

Historic homes have similar styles and lower prices than nearby areas

While there are some riverfront condos and townhouses close to downtown, most of West Seventh’s housing stock is single-family homes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. “I think that the people who live here have been here for a while,” Lindsay says. “They’re familiar with the area, and they’re also very welcoming.” You’ll find a lot of Tudor Revivals, bungalows and Foursquares, as well as National Folk and Craftsman styles.

While over 50% of West Seventh’s residents rent, there are plenty of opportunities to own. The median single-family home price is lower than in nearby communities like Highland Park and Macalester-Groveland, which Lindsay says have similar home styles. Depending on size and condition, you can expect to pay between the mid-$100,000s and the high $400,000s. Townhouses and condos typically range from the mid-$100,000s to the high $500,000s.

Locals meet friends at one of the bars and breweries in West Seventh

Even though Saint Paul’s “nightlife” ends by 10:00 or 11:00 most days, West Seventh has plenty of bars and breweries that create a lively atmosphere. “To have a brewery right on the city street is pretty cool,” Lindsay says. Options include:

  • Waldmann Brewery, which has been serving lager-inspired brews since 1857
  • Parlour Saint Paul, known for its Old Fashioned
  • Bad Weather Brewing Company, which regularly hosts community events
  • The White Squirrel Bar, which has song-inspired cocktails and live music
  • Emerald Lounge, a cocktail bar with a dog-friendly patio
Locals head downtown for music venues and late-night events, whether they’re seeing a sold-out show at the Grand Casino Arena or cheering on one of the local acts in Lowertown.

A walkable neighborhood with bus stops and highway access

You can easily get around West Seventh on foot, especially if you’re heading to one of the restaurants or breweries. “Because of its location, it’s so easy to get to other points of the city,” Lindsay says. “It’s not right in downtown Saint Paul, but it’s close enough that if you need to get to the city...there’s easy connection points right through here.” Metro Transit buses stop throughout the neighborhood, which you can ride into downtown Saint Paul, Minneapolis or to one of the Metro Green Line Light Rail stations. You can also hop onto Interstate 35 East or Shepard Road if you’d prefer to drive. Most available parking is on the street, but there are a handful of public lots and garages.

The Mississippi River and Saint Paul parks offer plenty to do outside

Like most Saint Paul communities, West Seventh has plenty of parks. One of the largest ones is the Mississippi National River & Recreation Area, which spans 72 miles along the water. You can hike or ride your bike on the trails or bring your kayak and get in the water. During the winter, it becomes a popular destination for skiing and ice fishing. The historic Irvine Park is known for its landscaping, including an ornate fountain and colorful gardens. Palace Park offers more traditional amenities, including athletic fields, a playground and a skate park. It opens its hockey rink in the colder months and has a community center with a gym and sports leagues for all ages.
