Opened in 1996, Kasuun Elementary School is a public school in the Anchorage School District and serves kindergarten through sixth grade students. The average annual enrollment is 265. Kasuun is an Athabascan word meaning “beautiful place,” and Kasuun Elementary embodies that, starting with its surroundings. Located on East 68th Avenue, right off Elmore Road in Southeast Anchorage’s Abbott Loop neighborhood, Kasuun Elementary sits in the shadow of the Far North Bicentennial Park system and the Chugach Mountains. Faculty and staff are committed to creating a safe, engaging environment for every student and helping set them on the path to becoming lifelong learners. The school incorporates technology, art, music and character building into its traditional curriculum, as well as bilingual support for those students who speak English as a second language. The school also houses the IGNITE program, an enrichment program that provides supplemental learning activities for second through sixth grade students identified as gifted learners. Parent and student involvement is not only encouraged but considered vital to ensuring student success. Parents are welcome to participate in school activities, and students voice their opinions on non-academic but school-related subjects, such as when the student body voted in 2007 to change the school’s mascot from the Kritters to the Knights.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Staff does not help students progress. There are no plans in place to help students meet academic standards. The school does not provide progress reports. The staff allow students to repeatedly assault other students without consequences. They arrest students with special needs.

Great place for children to learn. Staff are thorough and attentive. PTA events are super fun and the kids love them. I feel very safe sending my kids there.
