“Learning with respect, learning for a lifetime” is the vision at Sand Lake Elementary. It’s also a way of life at this neighborhood school. Though its average enrollment of 525 students makes Sand Lake the largest elementary school in Anchorage, the sense of community and commitment to learning makes it feel much smaller. Sand Lake Elementary prides itself on having a strong community of learners. Students, parents, teachers, and the larger Sand Lake community work together to provide every student with opportunities to achieve academic success. Sand Lake staff is consistently recognized for their commitment to students, and parents are committed partners to both their students and the overall school community. Sand Lake Elementary also houses the Japanese Language Partial Immersion Program, one of eight dual language immersion programs in the Anchorage School District. Admission is based on a District-run lottery system administered every March and July. Students enrolled in the program spend half their day learning in Japanese, the other half in English, and become functionally proficient in speaking, reading, and writing in both languages. The program continues into Mears Middle School and Dimond High School and students who continue through high school are eligible to pursue a seal of biliteracy, which honors their achievement and makes them more attractive to college admissions offices and future employers.

My boys both attend Sand Lake, not the immersion program, and it is the best school they have ever been in. I am a teacher and very picky about schools and they have been in schools in Delaware, Tennessee, and Louisiana before moving to Alaska. The academics are on par with any school out there, but...
