In the quiet, tree-lined East Cesar Chavez neighborhood near the Colorado River, Sánchez Elementary School reflects the vibrant fusion of old and new that characterizes East Austin. As a dual-language school serving kindergarten through fifth grade, many students at Sánchez take classes in both Spanish and English. George Sánchez, the school’s namesake, was a pioneer in the field of bilingual education. An iconic mural painted in 1989 by former students and one of Austin’s top muralists, Raul Valdez, adorns the library’s wall. Part of the original Sánchez campus, the mural was carefully preserved when the school underwent major modernization. The renovated state-of-the-art facility features spaces for learning, collaboration and creativity. The updated playground incorporates natural elements and shade sails. In the tradition of many East Cesar Chavez residents, Sánchez students celebrate art and show their work at Austin’s La Peña gallery every year. Students can perform in the school’s Sánchez Aztec Singers choir, learn guitar, take dance or join the mosaic club. Sánchez also offers chess, robotics, gardening, tech club, running club and student council.

This school doesn't help the kids that need xtra help. Instead of helping my kid with her Reading they just let her fail. She received nothing but 3 and 4's all year long except Reading. They helped the Spanish speaking students, but not mine... they informed me all late in the year that my kid will...

Sanchez is a place that focuses on the entire child. The teachers and staff at this school go above and beyond the call of duty to provide for the needs of the students. This place is filled with culture, and is evident the moment you walk into the building. There are beautiful murals surrounding th...

I'm more hopeful for success and hope the principal continues to improve leadership. It has been a difficult process and Mrs. Garcia has always been challenged. We all hope for the best results.
