Located next to the Patrick O'Rourke Playground is Intermediate School 201, now known as The Madeleine Brennan School. Serving sixth through eighth grade students, this Dyker Heights school bears the name of the late Madeleine Brennan, who led I.S. 201 as one of the longest-serving principals in New York City history.
After becoming principal in 1963, Brennan would serve for 50 years before retiring. At the time of her appointment, not many other women held administrative roles in the New York City school system. Brennan created a fun educational atmosphere and encouraged a continued commitment to the arts despite strong shifts to a science and technology-focused curriculum.
In her honor, fun activities and events are promoted each year, such as an annual Shakespeare Festival, seasonal celebrations and a soapbox derby. Core academics complement exciting clubs and sports, including photography, basketball, soccer, drama, art, Lego robotics and martial arts. Students interested in journalism can join the digital newspaper club that publishes articles written by students and staff every month.

I am in the superintendent program and the teachers teach exceptionally well and are very nice. You will never get bored in class because the teachers will get you entertained. We have regents classes too if you are in superintendent which gives you a head start in high school. Most of my classmates got into a specialized high school while some of them got into Midwood which is still a good school.

This school is exceptional. The staff is one of a kind and the principal and vice principles are caring and Understanding! The academics in Dyker is at a higher level with masterful teachers and ones that care about their students. I am Very happy with my child's choice of schooling.

I would not recommend this school to anyone. The teachers are disrespectful to their students and to parents. It is truly an awful place and environment. My son attended this school from 6th grade to 8th grade. He entered with an IEP and has met and exceeded all goals to the point that he no longer requires supported services. Worst three years of my life, ever. The students have no respect for anything or anyone and the dean should be fired for her actions towards the students. The bathrooms are unsanitary. The classes are okay if you're placed with a teacher who actually teaches.
