Located at 349 West Valencia Avenue, the school enrolls 467 students and serves transitional kindergarten through fifth grade. William McKinley is a highly rated school and was awarded the California Distinguished School and California Exemplary Arts School award in 2020. William McKinley initially evaluates all students through the English Learner Program, a student evaluation system based upon the student’s proficiency to listen, speak, read and write in English. This program supports proper placement of each child for optimum learning. In addition, the school offers the Gifted and Talented Education Program for students in third to fifth grades. Core classes of math, language arts and science are offered, as well as afterschool activities such as the McKinley student council. Students from first to fifth grades serve on the council and each student represents their respective grade level. The council meets monthly, and each student learns leadership skills and community service. Afterschool childcare is provided through the Afterschool Daze program, the Boys and Girls Club and “Around the Bell,” which is a parent-sponsored organization providing childcare before and after school.
