John Burroughs High School (JBHS) was named after John Burroughs, the American Naturalist who was active in the conservation movement. Located on West Clark Avenue in the City of Burbank, the school is part of the Burbank Unified School District. Built in the 1920s, John Burroughs High was not established as a high school until decades later in 1948. In recent years, the school received a new mascot in addition to a fresh logo and are now called “The Bears”. This esteemed institution went on to win their first-ever Division 4 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Championship for Baseball. In addition, the girls’ swim team captured their first CIF title and were the top scorers out of the 52 teams competing. John Burroughs also has a visual and performing arts program and was named A California Exemplary Arts Education Program in 2021, in addition to recently receiving several John Raitt Awards for Youth (JRAY) nominations for their production of “Into the Woods”. Burroughs also boasts students who compete for senior scholarships and students who are being considered for the Broadway Alliance Award, which would take them to New York City to participate in a week-long series of workshops with Broadway professionals. Another achievement for JBHS was the National League of Young Men honoring three of their students with the NLYM Philanthropy Awards for their hours of community service. With a variety of academic and extracurricular opportunities from which to choose, Burroughs High School truly presents students with an unparalleled experience during their years spent here.

Truthfully, had I had no involvement or commitment to Burroughs High School I may have dropped out and pursued a GED to leave sooner. However, because of my commitments, I had to find things to make the days pass and I'm glad I did because when I started to connect with friends, my understanding of the school grew and I took a liking. I was brutally honest in my review, but my friends ultimately made it worthwhile.

The best part of Burroughs was the fun time I had being involved in the school band. The worst times were the race jokes.

Our school is great. It is safe and offers a wide variety of classes for all levels. The teachers are caring. We have a medical and engineering academy and one of the best performing-arts programs in the country. I wish our school had more dances and whole-school activities after hours. We do lack a bit of school spirit. I also think our school has a bit to work on when it comes to securing the campus.

Safety is out the window here. They will let your student get bullied and harassed here.

Overall, my experience at Burroughs was not great. I had many teachers that were not good at teaching and made me feel inadequate as a result. They stress the importance of college without showing you other options in a society where having a degree rarely works out in your favor. Many teachers I ha...

All three of my children went to Burroughs. There are some excellent teachers here (and a few bad ones). If your child is into the performing arts (singing, dancing, instruments, tech crew, drama, art), this school is the best school in the U.S. for preparing for a performing arts career. One of my...

I have been a Burroughs parent for 5 years and feel this school has challenging academics, safety, and a huge variety of quality extra curricular programs for my kids to choose from.
