As a public school, Simmons Pinckney serves students in the Charleston County School District and provides free transportation to students, although many choose to walk or bike instead. With small classes at a 9:1 student-teacher ratio, students receive hands-on education and connect with their teachers. Located near the center of the Westside, students can easily commute to school and feel a connection with the community year round. The school mascot are the Panthers, and the school encourages students to engage in “Panther Pride” by participating in spelling bees, Red Ribbon Week activities and reading programs. Although the school has below-average scores in each subject, students are encouraged to push themselves and strive for growth and success. Teachers at this school are typically seasoned educators who create individualized learning plans to help their students achieve. This school is known for student engagement and satisfaction. The school was founded by two Charleston legacies, Phillip Simmons and Clementa Pinckney, who believed students should treat every day as an opportunity to learn in the classroom and community.
