"Be Empowered. Be Inclusive. Be Kind." The motto of Bateman Elementary School speaks to the school's vision of being a uniting force in one of Chicago’s most diverse neighborhoods. Located on a tree-lined street not far from the north branch of the Chicago River, the majestic red-brick walls of Bateman Elementary have welcomed neighborhood students for more than 100 years. Named for Newton Bateman, who in the 1850s was principal of Illinois’ first free school and would later become state superintendent of public instruction, the school first opened its doors on September 6, 1921. Today, Bateman Elementary School welcomes preschool through eighth grade students from the Albany Park and Irving Park neighborhoods. Just over 900 students roam the halls of this historic school. A key component to Bateman’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is its unique Dual Language Program. Students at every level are taught in both English and Spanish, starting as early as preschool. When they graduate, all students will be fully fluent in both languages. Bateman Elementary also offers students a wide variety of extracurricular programs. These include seasonal sports like basketball and soccer for both boys and girls, Drama and Science Clubs, Student Council and more.

I have two children attending Bateman - one in the bilingual program, and one in the English program. They were previously at a different CPS elementary, which also had a bilingual program. Their experience with Bateman has been excellent, and I struggle to understand why the school's rating is only...
