A charter school option for Forest Hills’ parents, Citizens Academy is part of Breakthrough Public Schools. Going from kindergarten all the way up to eighth grade, students enrolled at Citizens Academy are taught the school’s seven virtues believed to help shape children into becoming the best versions of themselves. These virtues include responsibility, respect, perseverance, honesty, generosity, courage and loyalty.
The charter school is separated into two different academies. One academy is Citizens Academy which serves kindergarten through fourth grade. The other academy is Citizens Leadership Academy which serves grades five through eight. Both academies are in the same building on Woodside Avenue.
For the students in grades kindergarten through fourth, Citizens Academy offers extracurricular activities focused on math and reading such as its C.S.I. program. For middle schoolers in the Citizens Leadership Academy, tutoring and homework clubs are offered. For students looking for exciting extracurriculars, chess and drama clubs are available for them to participate in. Citizens Leadership Academy has both boys’ and girls’ basketball coupled with a cheerleading squad to root them on to victory.
