My high school experience at DCHS was pretty average. I did sports, turned in my work, got good grades, and tried to get out as quickly as I could. Some of my teachers were great, and others made my life miserable and failed to check up on me during my worst depression and instead pointed out things I was doing wrong. Other than that, it wasn't hard to get good grades and participate in extracurriculars. A lot of the students started a lot of fights, and there's a real bad culture of kids who get away with anything and aren't disciplined at home or at school.

I would like to see more diversity, and I would like to see more professional people in the front office, trained in speaking to diverse communities of people.

Decatur is a what many would call a "mixed bag." While the school offers a wide variety of AP classes with high quality instructors, it does little to prepare one for such a course. AP European history would be considered a perfect example of this phenomenon. As a freshman I took World History Honors, and it wasn't rigorous at all. The coursework consisted of fill-out-as-you-go notes and tests with nearly identical study guides, I don't recall ever using a textbook in the class. When I took AP European history my sophomore year, I was utterly shocked at the amount of homework given, and the tests took some time to adjust to. I heard similar stories from friends in other courses, which is extremely unfortunate. The school has a major positive, however, which is the generous culture of the staff and students. Many students have been able to acquire much needed clothes for free by speaking to any administrator, and the Summer Feeding program helps students obtain consistent nutrition.

I went to Decatur only because my parents didn't know better. I was one of the extremely few who went on to get my Doctoral degree, and looking back at the foundation Decatur set me up with, I still can't believe I made it this far. Horrible college and general life prep. I'm still learning things I...

I love Decatur and say I went there with pride. It's a great community and provides a good education. The staff is very supportive and the learning communities cater to each individual student.

I have had 3 children go through this school. I really like the small community set up. I wish the communities were defined a little more and had stronger personalities but still they help keep kids from falling through the cracks. More students are graduating every year. I also LOVE that more advan...
