In 1922, Skinner Middle School opened its doors as Skinner Junior High School. Today, Skinner serves approximately 600 students in grades six through eight. The school offers a gifted and talented program, an honors program that includes all core subjects, and a STEM program for science, technology, engineering and math. There are also programs such as Special Education and English Language Learners to support students. Skinner students compete in science fairs, work with their hands in the newly revitalized wood shop and play sports. Students can participate in floor hockey, volleyball, basketball and soccer. Cross country is also offered in the fall, while tackle football is available in the spring. They also head the Restorative Justice League, a committee of students dedicated to teaching mediation methods. The restorative approach to behavioral issues makes Skinner Middle School stand out. Staff members seek to understand the root causes of the behavior and work with students to process more meaningful approaches to conflict resolution. Skinner is also a 1-to-1 technology school, allowing every student to have a Chromebook to use at home and in class. Skinner Middle School holds special days throughout the school year for students to learn empathy and for staff to better recognize trauma and other causes of undesirable conduct. The restorative practices at Skinner emphasize building, maintaining and repairing relationships between students, teachers and the community.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

We are super happy with Skinner and love that it is our neighborhood school. The administration has been very responsive when we have reached out, including a class change request and some help with a peer situation. The social justice department worked quickly when our son felt intimidated by anoth...

My kid is an eight grader at Skinner this year and I have seen her grow not only as a student but also as a person. Skinner offers a positive environment where school administration and teachers work together to ensure all kids are thriving. I'm grateful my kid has been able to attend Skinner for he...

The only good part of this school is the band. The office workers are some of the most incompetent people I've met. They won't write you passes even when you clearly deserve one. The lunch is disgusting and makes me sick to even look at. They expect us to get from one side of the building to the oth...

This is our second year at Skinner and as an involved parent, I am so impressed by the continued support and dedication of the staff to these kids. Our son has embraced middle school better than we ever expected and is thriving both educationally and socially. We couldn’t be happier our son is there...
