Located at 8500 Brookwulf Dr., Alexander Elementary enrolls 700-plus Adventurers in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. The school’s motto is “Growing leaders every day”, which has taken on a different twist with Alexander Elementary’s new undertaking—its very own SPARK Park!
The SPARK in SPARK Park stands for school park, as the program was created in 1993 by then-city council member Eleanor Tinsley to help eliminate “park deserts.” Much of Alief is in a park desert, since residents are more than a 10-minute walk away from a public park.
Alexander students raised $5,000.00 for the park to help create ownership, while also investing teacher and student hours into painting hundreds of tiles which now decorate a curved, concrete bench.
The theme of the tiles, “Moving into the Future”, reflects the eye-catching hot air balloon sculpture at the SPARK Park entrance. The rest of the park features colorful play equipment, benches, covered picnic tables and a one-fifth-mile concrete walking trail. The students enjoy the park during the school day, and it's open to the community during non-school hours.
On the academic side, Alexander students enjoy a student-to-teacher ratio of 13-to-1 which allows them to receive individualized instruction if needed.
