About 750 Tigers in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade are roaring to go at Hicks Elementary. In keeping with their motto, they’re discovering new ways of learning and leading. The school is located on Hemlock Hill Drive—a fanciful street name since Houston's hills are in notoriously short supply. Hicks students are doing as well as their Texas peers in terms of academics, while progressing at a slightly above-average rate. Like the other Alief Independent School District elementary campuses, Hicks recently rolled out an all-day pre-kindergarten program. Featuring innovative, immersive classrooms where students learn through play, the program is free to those who qualify as well as those who speak a language other than English at home. District parents, guardians and teachers whose kids don't qualify for free pre-kindergarten can pay reasonable tuition for this high-quality program. From pre-kindergarten on, Hicks works to support its English-language learners through a range of bilingual education programs. Bilingual education is a full-day instructional program that addresses emergent bilingual students' cognitive, social and language needs. Using students' home languages and English, this method of instruction teaches both English and academic subjects. Qualifying kindergarten students can participate in the One-Way Dual Language Program.
