Although Alief Independent School District was formally recognized in 1917, the area was largely rural until the 1960s. Farmers grew rice, cotton, and corn and raised cattle on the flood-prone prairie. When the Southwest Freeway opened in 1961, the school district grew exponentially. Alief Elementary School, later renamed for beloved 3rd-grade teacher Cynthia Youens, was the first school built in Alief's modern era. Today’s bustling Youens Elementary is home to about 900 Great Gators in PK-5th grade. The students aren’t doing as well on standardized tests as their Texas peers, but they’re making above-average academic progress. Qualifying Youens students can participate in the one-way dual-language program. In this program, native Spanish-speaking students use their primary language and English to learn academic subjects and language. They work up to 50% instruction in Spanish and 50% in English. All Youens students from first grade on up can participate in the tuition-free Children Interacting Afterschool program. Best known as CIA, the program extends social, emotional, physical, and academic learning for several hours after the school bell rings. Kids enjoy supervised snacks, homework, and activity time.

Teachers do not teach so students do not learn. Poor administration. Unfriendly and rude. My child’s teacher went on maternity leave half the year and had a substitute teacher most of the school year without any notice to the parents. My other child also had a substitute teacher most of the year as...

Horrible school! I feel bad that my kids had to attend here for 3 years. The people working the morning drop off lines are so incompetent and mean to the students. Teachers lack experience and are unwilling to help when kids need help. I have email communications with teachers with such bad grammar,...

I would give this school zero stars if I could. The staff here are extremely unprofessional. I mean all staff and teachers. They just hire anyone to teach here and anyone to work here. This school is temporary for my kids until we move to a better school district. Teachers lack knowledge and teachin...
