Jacksonville Beach residents seeking the Montessori method of education for their children will be pleased to find the Discovery School. Founded in 1990, the school follows the Montessori principles of a child-centered curriculum that encourages independent learning in the Jacksonville Beach area of Florida.
The Discovery School offers a toddler program for children 18 months to three years old, a primary program for younger elementary children, an elementary program and a middle school program. Throughout their education children are placed in multi-age classrooms that encourage shared peer experiences and help to expand learning beyond the traditional role of the teacher.
In addition to the core curriculum, the school focuses on the arts, languages, international studies, STEM and EcoDiscovery. Physical education is integrated into the program and students can cheer the school’s Discovery Dolphins in basketball, volleyball, flag football and soccer. The Discovery School students may elect to attend an afterschool enrichment program, summer camp and participate in clubs that are designed to encourage cooperation and creative thinking.
The Discovery School is a private nonprofit independent school with more than 100 students. It is accredited by the Florida Council of Independent Schools and is affiliated with the American Montessori Society.
