Established in 1950 and named after the patron saint of the blind, St. Lucy Catholic School is a private school serving transitional kindergarten through eighth grade. Located at 2320 Cota Avenue, St. Lucy primarily serves the city of Long Beach but enrolls students from the surrounding city of Signal Hill. With a population of approximately 160 students, St. Lucy offers an integrative approach to education and focuses on nurturing each student's spiritual, intellectual, social and academic growth. St. Lucy endeavors to create a nurturing environment that provides each student with individual support for their spiritual exploration and discovery. St. Lucy also focuses on academic excellence and core math, science, English, social studies and California history curriculum. The school provides engaging extracurricular activities, including art, physical education, music, yearbook, theater arts and an annual speech debate. St. Lucy's student council offers students an opportunity to serve their peers and gain leadership skills. The school features a variety of sports, including football, volleyball, basketball and cheer. In addition, St. Lucy sponsors an annual spring play and a talent show where students get an opportunity to showcase their unique interests and specialties.
