Established in 1980 and named after a former superintendent of Long Beach, William Logan Stephens Jr. High School, also known as Stephens Middle or SMS, is a public school in the Long Beach Unified School District. Located at 1830 W. Columbia Street, the school enrolls approximately 700 students and serves grades six through eight. SMS offers a variety of exploratory electives in addition to core academics. Project Lead the Way immerses students in hands-on computer science and engineering projects using animation, coding and design software to expose them to a range of potential career applications. The school also features a Gifted and Talented Education Program, also known as GATE/EXCEL where eligible students are challenged academically at an accelerated pace. In the program, students examine details, ethics and trends to become creative problem-solvers and take on leadership roles at SMS. Home of the Junior Jackrabbits, student-athletes can participate in football, volleyball, basketball and soccer; and a variety of extracurricular activities including robotics, student council and the FOR club, which encourages students to be agents of change and build powerful communities through kindness, dignity and respect. Additional student electives include art, music, and an introduction to computers for sixth graders.

This is not a school for the faint-hearted. Middle school is rough and you either need to be able to speak up for yourself with confidence or find something to keep you out of the nonsense like music. The music teacher allows students to practice instruments during lunch if they want. The kids have good hearts but are rough around the edges. Life is real and these kids are just trying to be kids the only way they know-how.

They see me and stop asking if I want a ride. The girls tell me how hot I am and how I should totally get in the car with them an...
