Frederick J. Gaenslen School offers comprehensive prekindergarten through eighth-grade education to the Riverwest Neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It's complemented by two pre-K through fifth grade elementary schools: Riverwest Elementary and Fratney School. All three have roughly the same number of students per grade level. When you first glance at the statistics, this looks like a relatively typical neighborhood school for Milwaukee. When you start to look closer, it stands out — particularly for a focus on students with special needs. Gaenslen moved to its current location in 1988. The new facility allowed students with special needs to study alongside others in rooms with special dividers. There are also accessibility features throughout the building. Kids with limited mobility enjoy independence and freedom when moving around the hallways, participating in fire drills, using bathrooms, navigating between floors and even swimming in the pool. Frederick J. Gaenslen School has a full range of conventional education services. Children from the neighborhood attend school here alongside special-education students. Since the facility is designed specifically for this type of integrated learning and there is a high percentage of trained staff, Gaenslen remains comparable with other Milwaukee schools in terms of attainment and growth. A final note on Gaenslen: It's also home to various community resources. The most unique example is the fully equipped textile and weaving center, but there are several other enrichment options for people of all ages.

The classrooms are loud, there are fights almost every day, and the school is severely understaffed. 1/5 would give 0 stars if I could. Would not recommend.

Out of the three or four weeks that I was there, I had maybe one good day where the kids were behaved and respectful. I could've had more with them, but sadly the teachers didn't seem to do much with helping the students and instead just handed them off the disciplinary supervisors that were in char...

I do not feel the same schooling as for the special needs children. Just my opinion from placing a k4 both times and I do not see a real difference of learning structure as far as his writing skills nor reading skills and he's been placed in 1st and I feel he should have been held back for better im...

This school is phenomenal in so many ways. As a parent, of a child with special needs who is in a wheel chair. This is one of the most comfortable and cozy environments ever. They meet my son's needs in every aspect. Therapies, speech, OT, vision and swim are just some of the additional things offer...
