Located in the Avenues West neighborhood near downtown Milwaukee, Highland Community School is a unique and innovative charter school that offers a Montessori education to about 450 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Montessori promotes independence through individual and small group instruction and self-directed study, and classrooms are typically set up as a multi-age environment. Affiliated with the Milwaukee Public Schools, Highland was founded in 1968 and is governed by a parent board of directors. The school operates toddler (14 months and above) and children's programs in addition to elementary and middle school academic offerings. Beyond academics, Highland offers co-curricular activities including sports, visual and performing arts, environmental education and world studies, as well as clubs for chess, drama, technology, scouting and more. Tuition is required, and admission is by application, with residents of Milwaukee given priority status. Before and after school programs, including child care, are provided for an additional fee.
